Yesterday evening, around 6.30, I felt so c-c-c-cold that I decided to put the heating ON. Went to get my slippers on the way to the timer switch, touched the radiator for balance while changing shoes for slippers and discovered that the rads were ALREADY ON. Mr Ollie had beaten me to it ........ but how disappointing to think you need it on and find it already is !!!!!!!
In fairness, I think we'll notice it more when the house has had a chance to warm up properly - needs to be on for a couple of hours in a morning and then another couple in the evening. That SHOULD produce a noticeable rise in overall temperature.0 -
Does anyone know where you can get those little cardboard room temp thermometers that tell you when it's too hot or to turn the heating up?
Sorry if this has already been asked, it's such a long thread that I've not got time to plough my way through it.2013: Interflora Vouchers, Christmas Decorations, NNUK goody bag, thermos flask, macwet gloves0 -
I was sent one by my supplier - worthwhile giving them a call and asking if they have something like that. I was also sent a similar thing for inside the fridge, to make sure that was at the correct temperature. I'm with E-on - but it was a while ago that I got them.0

Hope you're feeling better. I don't know how good this tip is for curing coughs but received it in an email recently.
VICKS Vapour Rub - INTERESTING
During a lecture on Essential Oils, they told us how the foot soles can absorb oils. Their example: Put garlic on your feet and within 20 minutes you can 'taste' it.
Some of us have used Vicks VapoRub for years for everything from chapped lips to sore toes and many body parts in between. But I've never heard of this. And don't laugh, it works 100% of
the time, although the scientists who discovered it aren't sure why.
To stop night time coughing in a child (or adult as we found out personally), put Vicks VapoRub generously on the soles of your feet, cover with socks, and the heavy, deep coughing will stop in about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief. Works 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly.
Just happened to tune in A.M. Radio and picked up this guy talking about why cough medicines in kids often do more harm than good, due to the chemicals in them This method of using Vicks VapoRub on the soles of the feet was found to be more effective than prescribed medicines for children at bed time. In addition it seems to have a soothing and calming effect on sick children who then went on to sleep soundly.

2 fires so far (fire does central heating as well). 15 in lounge, but feels ok. The best thing we have done is put a really thick curtain over the front door, and another one at the bottom of the stairs. Has made a massive difference! Over half term, I'm hoping to make some window quilts for the lounge!0

hi just googled window quilts and would love to make some for the flat but having a back boiler behind the gas fire we need a airflow through the top of the window. through a thing dont know the name air vent i think. gas fitter said we must not block this up but the wind howls through it like a banchee makes a real load noise the sofa has to go in front of this and really cold and draughty any tips i close the curtains early on and have fleeces for linings but during the day its freezing”Pour yourself a drink, (tea for me now)
Put on some lipstick
and pull yourself together”

We've not had ours on so far, we've been wearing extra layers and snuggling under a blanket in the evenings, but it's been so cold first thing in the morning lately that last night I set the heating to come on just before we got up this morning, so it would be warm while we showered and got ready for work. However, when we got up, it was still freezing as the rads weren't on (and we had frost here this morning!). When I got home I bled the rads, and then put the heating on again but it's still not working, so just had to call an engineer out, but as I had to arrange it for when someone can be here, the earliest will be Tuesday afternoon! Luckily we have a gas fire in the lounge, but that doesn't help with the rest of the house.Weight loss challenge 2/10lbs
