Is your heating ON or OFF?

Hello. First time poster here but fairly long time lurker!!
My heating is mostly off at the moment but have had to put it on for an hour a few times as my flat is always so cold. I've seen steam from breathing out a few times already this year and I dread to think what the temperature is inside!
I'm snuggled in my duvet at the moment with slippers on and my dressing gown on over jeans and a long sleeved top and hoody and I'm ok!
This year is pretty tough for me as I have to pay for braces which are costing me a lot of money that I really don't have ( though my own fault for being too scared a couple of years ago when I was young enough to get them free on nhs) so I'm trying to not put the heating on until I'm not warm enough even with hot water bottle, blankets etc.
It's quite tricky for me though as I'm a person who does feel the cold a lot. But right now I'd rather me dressed in layers than worrying about adding to my gas bill!!0 -
Hi all
Glad to report that the trigger finger hovering over the ON switch stayed put, but instead we put a fair amount of wood on the stove and left the door open, which warmed up the whole house really nicely - the wood is scavenged during the year, chopped and stored in the shed in the garden so we do not consider that an extravagance. It is incredible how many people throw away perfectly good wood in skips, all the better for us!
I am still quite unwell but not feeling cold while I am in bed, so I think that we can resist another few days, hopefully, before putting the central heating on. Good luck to all of you who are trying to make it to November, too!
Annie123, I think that we get less of a cold house because ours faces South so on these last days of good weather, with the curtains up, the front of the house was fairly warm!
I don't count lighting my open fire either (from a financial pov) as I didn't buy the fuel and I can't take it with me when my house is sold. I will light it soon I think as it takes a long time to get going.
Hope you're better soon, take it easy if you can. xTrying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

We haven't got ours on yet, but it is feeling a lot colder. Mind you, we got cavity wall insulation last year (for £99!!) and there is definitely a big difference in the temp of the house.
What do you guys do about ventilating the house? I really need to get the windows open for a bit or we will be having damp problems.
Should I just wait til everyone is at work/school/nursery, and open the windows then? I suppose if I leave the gardening, energetic housework til those times that may work?
What do you all do?Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These
(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...:D:D

thats what i do re window opening,i leave it til its just me in house, making sure any heating is off, then throw open windows wide for an hour,i rush around doing housework so i dont feel the cold too much .seems to be effective at the mo,gets trickier when heating is on as i dont want to waste any accumilated heat from house, maybe i'll just do one room at a time then.0 -
Mine is still mostly off. Have flicked on a few times to take the edge off but am trying to keep it OFF! I find that with oil the fluctuating price helps me resist switching on, as I'm desperate not to have to buy in January! (the most expensive time of year)
A few people have moaned when they've come to my house, but I'm not bothered. When the cat has icicles hanging from her paws the heating will go on!0 -
I caved and put mine on this afternoon. My house is very poorly insulated (its a rental, so I can't do anything much about it) so stays cold most of the year round, irregardless of the temperature outside! Let's just say I didn't have to open a window at all this summer!Because it's fun to have money!

Ah yes that does make a difference, my front faces directly north:mad:
so no sun at all gets into my living room or DD's bedroom.
My bedroom, kitchen, and little study face south, non of which need warming, in fact its a problem in the summer, have been known to move the mattress into the living room and sleep on the floor!
I should have bought one on the other side of the road!0 -

I love fresh air, my bedroom windows are open 24/7 365.....:)if your snuggled down in warm bedding its so good to have a window open and breath that beautiful fresh cold air,,,,:) even better when you have a minus -2 outside ....:D no one will come to any harm by breathing clean air when they are asleep,,you will not be cold in your bed.........also need ventilation during the day to keep a good circulation of air,I hate going into some peoples homes and they have cooking smells all over , doggy smells:eek: and horrible bedroom smells....wow that knocks me out...yes Im a fussy cow ,;) but I suppose we all have our own standards which we like to go by......0 -
We have our heating off tonight and the log fire on. It is so toasty in here. We had the heating on lots over the weekend though as we had guests and last night it was freezing - it was 1 degrees at 9am so I don't know what it got down to in the night.0

We haven't had the heating on this year. Just been to check and it's 15 degrees inside the house. It won't be coming on unless we literally can't pile any more jumpers on! :P0
