Hi. enjoying this thread. I moved into a property nearly 3 years ago which has oil central heating - i have always had gas central heating and for 20 years since i had my own place I took gas very much for granted on having gas on tap at the flick of the switch and consequently never really gave it much thought.

now i have to fill up an oil tank to keep the boiler running - and now i am much more conscious about how often we have our heating on.

we live in a modern 3 bed property, double glazing and well insulated etc. for the first year, we got through 2000 litres of oil and this winter (09/10) i decided to see if we could reduce that. first thing i did was not turn the heating on in the morning Mon-Fri as we both get up, get washed and dressed, have a quick cuppa and we are off to work so no sense in putting heating on for that. second, i switch the heating off at 9.30pm instead of 10.30....... as we are both off to bed by 10.39ish we havent noticed the difference as the property retains the heat well enough.
when we had the really cold weather from before xmas and into january, i left the heating on very low 24/7 for about 4 weeks and turned it up for about a couple of hours each evening when we were eating supper and showering.

i think i have reduced our consumption by about 20%, maybe a bit more but will know for sure by september 2010 when i top the tank up for winter.

i havent gone cold and husband hasnt moaned so will be well worth it.

normally turn my heating off at end of april but have already turned it down another degree and will aim to turn off mid april.

    regards to all

Hiya, we have chaged our minds and the CH went OFF this afternoon. Will see how it goes? This evening the house is 20C with no heating, just the heat from cooking a small tea. We can always put it back on if the weather turns cold.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.

I'm still wearing my thermals and a fleece and I won't be casting them off until the weather gets a lot warmer than it is now. 15 degrees in here right now and it's just right. The electric blanket is still going on at night but I suspect it's pure indulgence rather than actual need

I dont have central heating. Just a wood burner and an oil fired radiator upstairs, which is on a timer. That hasnt been on for about a week now and the wood burner I am not keeping in at night. I am hoping that the batch of logs I have just bought will last me now until autumn. Tonight is the coldest I have felt for a while so its going full blast and the cat is very happy!!

I have switched ours off a few days ago, though I am a little chilly tonight. Maybe its time for a cuppa :)
  • I've just changed mine from on 24/7 to two hours in morning and three at night. I'm on oil fired heating and it is mega expensive. Have just been on economy drive via this website for past three weeks. Very inspirational:j
  • ON, it is flipping freezing here!!:)
