    Off and windows still open

But then I don't like my house too warm and have the bedroom windows open all year around so I have the rad in the bedroom turned off and that never goes on.
The bathroom is so tiny that a shower or bath warms it for hours and as I shower every morning for work it is not really an issue
I have no rad in the kitchen at all and only a tiny one in the hall and a small one in the living room so really there is nothing to be gained by having them on at all.
I do have an open fire in the living room that get used for Dec/ Jan when not at work and the rest of the time I would put on more clothe or bring a blanket down.

  • We've just turned ours off again - it was way to hot and I don't want to be giving Mr. GAs man more money than I have to this year ;op

YAY!!!.. well a lot of us made it to November without putting the heating on..

Ollie.. that's a grand idea.. putting it on with thermostat really low.. is that for overnight too? It is hard getting out of bed into a freezing cold room at 7am.........

I have it on a timer - 7.00am-9.00am and 7.00pm-10.00pm. At weekends, if young grandchildren, or my mother, are visiting, I'll over-ride the timer as I don't want them being cold.

This morning was the first time that I've felt any warmth in the radiator when I came downstairs at 7.15 but it didn't come back on after that - so it must have kicked in bang on time and then off again after a few minutes.

Have to say that I'm really lucky in that my bedrooms are never cold - even in the depths of winter. This house is very well insulated and open plan - so any heat goes straight up the stairs. The only radiators that get switched on are the Living Room and Dining Room (where the comp is ;)) plus bathroom on No.2 IF somebody is having a shower while the heating is on the timer.
  • Got a bit chilly yesterday with all that wind, but wasn't at home much so no heating required! Nice sunny day here today :)

Well our temperatures dropped last night and they seem set to stay low for the foreseeable future. My sitting room was 12C when I came down. Weirdly, I didn't feel cold though and have only just put on a cardi. It's now 14.5C in here and my fingers are cold but the rest of me is fine. I'm about to have lunch and a cuppa though so that will sort me out.

I'm hoping to last a while longer without the heating but haven't set myself a target. My sister reminded me that for years we had no central heating when we were younger and we were fine. Am off to do my imeasuring now - that will motivate me to keep going I think!

I just want to make it clear that I'm only challenging myself - not issuing a challenge to anyone else! I'm young, healthy and know my limits. And I do make sure I'm warm enough - just not with the central heating. I'd hate to think of anyone putting their health and wellbeing at risk by not staying warm. Stay cosy everyone!
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

  • At this time last year it was snowing so we are very lucky at the moment with this mild weather.

Thermostat said 13 degrees this morning and it did feel chilly but the heating is staying off for the foreseeable future. Being unemployed is focusing the mind somewhat, to say the least

I cracked on about the 20th October and put my small portable heater on. It does a grand job and heats the room quite quickly. I'm going to put it on a timer I think. Something like 6:00-7:30am and 5:00-9:00pm. That basically covers the hours I'm actually in the house!
I still haven't turned the storage heaters on, because once they're on, they're on for the winter. They were pretty useless last winter, so I'm using alternative means of keeping warm this winter... Hopefully!

We gave in today because it's been proper cold today and yesterday. Up until then it was really no hardship, we've had quite a mild autumn. In fact I was sweltered with no heating on Saturday.
