    Morning everyone

Only 12 days to go now. Ours is still off - OH is now putting his fleece on each evening and hasnt mentioned the heating once. Our quilted throw is working magic and we are now warm in bed. Its the hands and feet that still feel it when working on the PC.

The forecast for us is - getting colder and wetter in the next few days. We are going to try to get to 1st November - or further if we have a late warm spell.

I agree - soup, and hot dinners/drinks is helping us too.

I gave in a bit further last night and turned my heating up a notch - I just couldn't get warm with it on the lowest setting.

It's probably very un-OS of me but I really can't see the point in having the heating switched off if I need it: I'm not one of these people who walks round in shorts and tshirt and then turns the heating on because I'm cold, but I refuse to have to sit bundled up like the Michelin Man in my own home. If I need more than two jumpers and a fleecy blankie to be warm, then the heating goes on (or up). I can always turn it down again later if the weather warms up.

I spent enough time freezing in my first flat, where I couldn't afford to keep it warm - I ain't going to be cold for the sake of it now I can afford heating! :D
Back after a very long break!
  • I'm afraid I've given in. Have adjusted the settings though - temp down - amount of time on also down.

To be fair my heating bills are not too bad - but that gas fire is definately not going on yet!

I was hoping to last until Nov 1st but caved in early and set the timer last night. I did feel like I'd "failed" but then OH pointed out (and I quote!):
"Being cold makes you miserable, which in turn makes me miserable, and you wouldn't want to make me miserable, would you?" :rotfl::rotfl:

So I set it to be on for an hour in the morning (just before I get up and whilst me and OH are showering/getting dressed etc) and for an hour in the evening when we get home, and the thermostat is at 17deg with radiators set to "low" (and "off" in the rooms we don't use). I have to say, it was lovely this morning - not too warm, but not so cold that parts of me iced over as I ran to the shower!
  • Oh you lucky people to have heating ..... we've rennovating our house atm and although we tried our best to have heating sorted long before now it's still not quite there. Upstairs is all plumbed in and we have it on for an hour in the morning and then a couple of hours at night. I work from home at desk and it's 15 degrees in here atm (brrrrr) Currently wearing 2 pairs of socks, long sleeved top with fleece and body warmer on top and fingerless gloves. Also heat the wheat bag up in the microwave. Think my mum is going to bring round a halogen heater later. Wonder if it'll cost loads in electric? Maybe it doesn't matter as we're not paying for heating hmmmmmm
  • After returning from holiday this month to a £500 electricity bill for my old property from a year ago, the heating is certainly not going on until November. I'm wearing a padded gilet over my jumper and use the blanket if if I'm sitting still. OH is from the south of France (not exactly the tropics) and is complaining a bit, but I've noticed him wearing his beret the last few nights!

Super spicy carrot soup also works a treat!
The best way to forget all your troubles is to wear tight shoes.
  • No heating for me: I just lost my job on Friday and the quarterly utility bills arrive in November. It's 13 degrees in here at the moment but the windows are wide open. I've got my warn fleece and thermal socks on and it's OK so far. I'm going to put off putting the central heating on for as long as I can stand it. I've got my fingerless gloves on stand-by so I can still use the computer if I want but how longer will I be able to afford internet access is the big question.....

So sorry about your job - hope you're ok and find another job. Can you get free internet access at your local library if you have to cancel it at home? Fingerless gloves are a great idea - I used to find my hands were cold even though the rest of me was ok but it seems to have stopped lately.

We've had a warm afternoon here. Hobbled out to the garden (sprained ankle) for some fresh air and it was lovely. The sitting room was 21.5C and have had the windows open. So am still happy with the heating off.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

B&T - so sorry about your job. Do hope something else soon appears on the horizon for you.
Our British Gas dual fuel capped deal ends in December. My OH has been doing some advanced research on finding another deal but the comparison websites are a minefield and never seem to compare apples with apples, By the time you've weaned out those applying penalties, it's as bad as trying to find an uncomplicated interest rate without sneaky bonus deals for your savings. Life was a lot easier in the old days when you only had the option of one utility supplier, even if it was more expensive!

Definitely off for me today - not even that cold here. Also, I've turned down the water heat so that instead of piping hot water I get it just right to have showers without getting chilly. That ought to save quite a bit of gas.
