Still off, but last night a few logs went into the wood burners and two hot water bottles into my bed!

Today DS is complaining that he is freezing. He is a strappy 20 years old so it is not like I am depriving a young child of necessary warmth, and I told him to wear a jumper over his fancy (cotton) t-shirts. Now he has gone and had a hot bath (in the middle of the day) - I wonder if it would not be more economical to give the house a shot of warmth through central heating rather than have him run full hot baths every day.

What do other people do here about their moaning and whinging family members (who, btw, are not paying the bills and also don't give a monkey's about the environment) like my DS? Any advice gratefully received!
Hi Caterina, mine are the same age. I put fleeses all around the house, bedrooms and sofa's and see them being used every day. At the moment we just lite the coal fire and leave the lounge door wide open so the heat spreads. As it gets colder we have 2 convector heater fires that run @ 2p an hour that get used in diffrent rooms. On occasions will put one in the hall.Lastly the SC will go on.
Can you not give him one of theese convector type fire's? I see Comet sell them for £33. I think with the 20's people living at home they find it hard when you talk about the electric/gass bill. When they move into there own place the understanding becomes very real.
Mine are the same as all others and I now find myself shutting the back door left open for the dog or walking around in the evening switching things off when they have all gone out. Do you know what, I love my adult children being at home. I try not to say to much as the 2 @ home do help with little jobs and are good company comming and going.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.

Gave in and put the heating on last night but after an hour turned it off again as it was boiling hot.
Not bothered about the mornings as a nice hot shower sorts that out.
Trying not to give into temptation again tonight rest of my body is fine but my hands are freezing and I do draw the line at wearing gloves in the house. Will see what it's like after dinner.

I have managed not put central heating on yet, we are quite lucky that house stays really warm, its timber fame supposedly its meant to be better at keeping heat in, I am going to hold off as long as I can woolly jumpers will be out first
  • Mine's still off, despite a 3yo and a 5yo, me being a bit of a pansy, and the woody floors!

I'm holding out till November.. shivering a tiny bit though!

The temperatures that I quoted came from many websites and also based on my room thermometer indicator that I received from my gas/elec supplier.

Yes, I found those quoted too. One or two places seemed to suggest that dampness is a worse problem though (silly me, I didn't bookmark so don't know which sites) and I could see how that would be the case.

My house is rarely over 16C these days (heating still off and haven't bothered light the fire) but not at all damp or humid and I'm wondering if that's why I feel comfortable (with my woollies on). The bedroom is even cooler, I guess about 14C but I prefer it cold - I have put a fleece blanket over the duvet though and am wearing snuggly pyjamas.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Turned ours on this evening for the first time (darn it, was hoping to hold out until November!!), but it was sooooooooo cold, and its lovely and toasty now! :D

However, it will still be going on and off on an "as needed" basis - I haven't switched it onto auto yet...:p

Put one electric fire on (on low) for an hour each evening in the past few days and that seems to be all I need at the moment.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.
  • On from 5am til 6am just to take the chill off for when we get up. Not at any other time yet though - but soon .....

    Still off
Although I'm gradually wearing more and more clothing around the house and use a blanket when sitting down and reading. The winter duvet's out as well. I shall give in when I get to hat and fingerless gloves.

I found making a very thick door curtain has been a godsend, really stops the drafts although my window frames are so warped that I can get a good airflow without opening the windows. My theory is that this stops me getting colds....

When I go and visit my mother I find it quite unbearable, no air and tropical temperatures, really stifling.
