Thanks amtrakuk, I can see what you mean. I'm in two minds about the virtues of leaving it off now! I'll have to have a think about this. It was 14.5C when I came down this morning, chilly but ok once I was wrapped in a fleece. But with all the blinds open, the sun soon warmed the sitting room up to a balmy 19C. It's a bit cooler now but fine under the fleece.

ETA: Found this interesting article about central heating while googling.

Will have a look at the article in a min... The great debate seems to be, is it more expensive/use more fuel keeping the bricks warm. As I have 1Kw oil filled electric rads I find it easier to keep the room at a steady temp. Heating up from cold takes hours and the heaters thermostats are on all this time.

I gave in for about an hour last night, got in about 10pm and there was that cold dampnessin the air.

On with a warm pair of slippers, Jumper and Ive found thick cheapo trackie bottoms from Asda are great, there made of like a fleece meterial and under a fiver!
  • My mam has hers on, my dad is useless and can't stand any sort of cold!!

I havent had mine on in the flat, we get alot of heat from downstairs, I was all snug in my pjs, dressing gown and slippers :)

We have our thermostat set to 15C I think so unless the temperature drops below this in the house it doesn't come on. However, saying that I did hear it click on this morning about 5am so the house obviously needed a little warm.

It seems a bit little bit chilly now in the house first and last thing but our bedroom window is still open slightly and at every opportunity I fling the windows and doors open to get rid of the stale air and bring in some fresh.

I just put another layer on or move about more and soon seem to warm up! :p

Ours hasn't come on yet and it won't do for a while yet. We're trying to save as much oil as possible.

We're got plenty of wood in the wood shed (thanks to the laying of next doors decking so all the off cuts) so can use the wood burner when it gets colder. I think it's been so warm and that's coming from someone that's only just come back from the Maldives!

It's still quite warm here in Somerset, though from past experience it's likely to become wintry overnight, so my finger is poised over the on switch.

For the first time this year DH and I sat under the quilt when we were watching TV last night as it was a bit chilly by 9ish, but atm I'm sitting here in a t shirt.

This morning once it had stopped raining the sun cam out and there was a definite sauna feel in the air!
Oh dear, here we go again.

Oh, I'm afraid it's not about that subject but I thought it was interesting all the same. I think I've become wussier and I definitely think the laminate floor in our house isn't as warm as carpet. I've put rugs down which helps.

I found a useful discussion about leaving the heat on (and now can't find the page ). The consensus seemed to be that it was ok for certain types of old house but not for modern houses. I don't like the feel of centrally heated air so I'm going to stick with leaving mine off for as long as I can, until I feel uncomfortable and fleeces etc don't work.

It's 16C inside today and it feels colder than yesterday when the thermostat gave the same reading. Maybe because it's dreary and grey outside. But I'm fine once I'm snuggled under layers. And a warm drink does wonders to kickstart my internal central heating (like that old Ready Brek ad on the telly).
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

  • it's not too bad here, (heating still off since march) although I can see DP caving in and putting it on first.

It's getting a little chillier but it's nothing a cardy or jumpers wont sort out, plus I feel like i'm coming down with something so that always makes me feel a little colder than what it is.

I was hoping to get through until November at least.
