I have an open fire too and have had the odd fire to take the chill off. I agree, it is so cosy and comforting. It's the best thing I have done to the house!SuzeQStan said:No GCH here still in NW UK.We are 18c in the house - having a log fire of an evening though in which we are burning self sourced wood we seasoned 1.5 years.

We had an old back boiler so, some years ago, I had a boiler installed upstairs and opened up the flue. I'd have loved a log burner but costs were prohibitive.
Having the security of the fire is immeasurable. Worse case scenario, wood can be sourced for free (although that isn't as easy as it sounds) and we can cook on it if needed.
I am pretty sure that the central heating didn't work if there was a power cut. Now that my heating is not working and needs costly repairs, having the fire makes the difference between comfort and misery!Putting these winter preps here so I don't forget!

Its been 15 degrees here in South Wales today and there's been a definite nip in the air.
Heating is not on yet but I think I should just blip it on to check the radiators and make sure they don't need bleeding etc before the weather does come in.
MIL is feeling the cold though and has spent most the day in pyjama's, dressing gown, fluffy blanket and a hot water bottle.
I have put a big fleece blanket as our sheet on the bed though over the mattress topper and we have a 10.5 tog duvet on but still have the window open. Hoping to hold off until November and I had my flu jab last week.Time to find me again6 -
Lit an open fire tonight as it was chilly... It didn't get off to a great start so I added fuel and prodded it a lot.
It's now 25c and I am regretting my life choices
