Is your heating ON or OFF?

Just had a terrible thought, here we all are cutting down loads and loads on gas and electric, me and DH included, I am literally obessed with our Electricty Monitor and I nearly cried when the monitor for the oil went from 9 (full tank) to 8, :rotfl: but...... surely the energy supply companies are going to be selling less becuase everyone is so conscious of how much they are using at the moment and wont that drive the prices up again ?, I mean if British Gas make £XXMillion per year and we all get our energy usage by a 1/4 then surely British Gas's profits will go down by a 1/4 !
I hope not cause we really cant afford it at the moment !
Oil has dropped by half of what it was in July, though I don't see that reflected much in the pump price here in the U.K. Thats not the case in North America, where the consumer is enjoying a steady drop, at least when it comes to filling up a vehicle. Furnace oil, a derivative of crude, is a popular form of home heating there so presumably that has also come down in price to what it was. And thats good news. Winters can be very cold with snow and temps well below freezing, so heating is NOT optional throughout much of North America. They simply couldn't tolerate the kind of wholesale piracy that goes on here with LNG.
And despite OPEC decreasing production in an effort to keep the cost per barrel from sinking too far, demand is down so its likely that tactic won't make much impact. At least not so long as there's no money circulating. They can thank the financial industry for that one.
The energy companies in the U.K. have stated very clearly that there will be NO rate decrease this year or even in the New Year. Not even after the supply they bought in the Summer is used up and they start selling energy bought at lower wholesale prices.
So your concerns are well founded.0 -
I sleep on a fleecy blanket, and take a hot water bottle to bed. Sleeping on the fleece makes a huge difference.
My dh phoned yesterday and told me he couldn't stay on too long as the oil company that own the rig (ExxonMobil) were moaning about the cost of phonecalls due to the drop in oil prices. Unbelievable. Have you seen their profits lately?0 -

I'm afraid I am. I could hardly believe it when my dh told me yesterday. My brother has worked for ExxonMobil for years, and he says despite them being one of the wealthiest oil companies, they're also the tightest.
Makes sense. The very rich stay that way by being tight fisted, but it strikes me as being awful petty. They can't get a good discount calling plan like us Joe Nobodies? :rolleyes:0 -
Personally I think an electric blanket is one of the cheapest and best ways to stay cosy. You cna go to bed early with a good book.pile of sweeties/jam sandwich/knitting. Wrap dressing gown round your top half and have a flask of tea beside you. I can't do without mine, a hotwater bottle isnt the same. It's like you're creating your own mini climate zone
Jam sandwich  LOL.
For me, it's some hot buttered toast or a Galaxy chocolate.

olliebeak, sk went on holiday I think in a caravan
Goodness, I bet she is freezing, in a caravan at this time of year (in the UK) - I hope for her sake that she has gone somewhere warmer!
Meanwhile our heroes (not!) are really enjoying the odd shot of CH in the house!
To all of you who still hold out: well done for holding out, good luck, do it for all the right reasons and please look after youselves.
For all, like us, who have put the heating on: a woman's gotta do what a woman's gotta do - if you felt you needed to put it on then it was the right thing to do!
For Quasar: it's the weak Italian stock that made us do it!:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
CaterinaFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
We put the central heating on the other night (before the boiler was moved) because we had 2 of DDs friends around for a sleepover after her birthday party and it didn't seem fair to make them endure arctic conditions
However that's the first time it's been on. We're trying to hold out until 1 November and having been coping pretty well by wearing thermal tops under our clothes and putting fleece blankets on our laps when we get cold. Hot drinks help a lot as well as they warm the hands. Also a hot shower warms me up for ages I find!
We had no hot water (or indeed any water) all day today  as the boiler was being moved, but thankfully it's working now so we can all have a hot bath/shower and I can wash my hair for our next birthday party which is tomorrow (followed by a sleepover)Finally Debt Free After 34 Years, But Still Need to Live Frugally

My house is so old and draughty - radiaters under windows as usual and its icy cold and warm all at the same time, we have thick curtains but any other suggestions ? they're old sash windows so let huge amounts of cold air through but its a rented house so can't get into extra glazing etc
Thanks
