  • We had snow up here and it is freezing cold up here so heating has definetly been on.

We were hoping to last out until the 1st but caved in yesterday (29th) as we were all feeling miserable with the cold. We also realised that our DD had a friend coming round for a sleepover on the 31st so it would have had to go on for her coming anyway. But we are pleased we held out this long - at least 3 weeks longer than usual.

We also bought some draught excluder strip in Homebase and put it around the door leading from the dining room into the garage where there was previously an awful draught.

Does anyone else have an integral garage? We've noticed that DD's bedroom above the garage is very cold compared to the rest of the upstairs. Any tips on improving this? We were thinking of putting more insulation on the garage ceiling above plasterboard.

Heating goes on every now and then. We're not using the timer yet, but it goes on as and when the need requires it. It was off for most of the day today because for us it was a beautiful day.

I've noticed that lots of people have mentioned condensation on the windows when they've closed the curtains at night. For all you with double-glazing - make sure that you leave any window vents in the open position (usually found above the actual windows).

I've heard of people closing these in the winter to stop draughts but when the curtains are closed as it goes dark each evening, you won't feel any 'airflow'.

Ceridwen - thanks for the hairdryer tip :T Will give that a try.

Well, I'm so glad I held out on putting the heating on yesterday, as it's been a bit milder and far more bearable today. 4 layers on yesterday, but back to 3 today. If it stays like this, then I can definitely go further with it. Middle of November would be great, as I'd have another direct debit payment taken and a little more credit built up. Never in a million years did I imagine I'd get this far, so whatever happens, I'll be happy :D
  • Still no heating on here in South Wales

We have a woodburner and been lighting it every night so the lounge is all nice and toasty. The doors have been left open so the hot air circulates around the house and it is definitely not cold!

We have a 3 year old so the heating will be switched on as soon as is necessary but that hasn't happened yet.

I've given in :o , just couldn't bear it any longer...having spent a couple of very cosy days in DD's home I got back this afternoon and it felt icy in the house so the heating is now set to come on at 6pm and go off at 9pm. Ah well, I lasted longer than I thought I would! I'll just have to spend a little less time on MSE  and do more 'clicky sites' over winter to help pay the bill. Thank goodness for the computer, MSE and all the advice I get on how to save money/make a few pennies - and be sensible about keeping warm :A .
  • Still no heating here, but I have to admit I took mardatha's advice and invested in a fleecy electric blanket, instead of my hotwater bottles.
It was heaven last night sliding into a lovely warm bed and even my hubby who insisted we did'nt need one said it was the best thing I've bought in a long time.
So thanks for the tip mardatha.
We're off for our monthly weekend trip to our daughter's in Manchester so we won't be putting on our heating till at least Monday, hopefully longer.
I can honestly say that I've enjoyed the heating challenge and whether or not we use our heating next week it's been interesting.
I know one thing my OH has'nt complained as I've had a renewed interest in cooking as it's been lovely and homely baking ect in a warm kitchen. The one room in the house that's been kept me going through the cold days.
Reminded me of when I was small and used to bake with my grandmother. No heating in those days anyway.
I know I could'nt of got this far if it had'nt been for this thread and I've been grateful for that.As someone said in an earlier post, solidarity.
    Thankyou ladies for that.

TheBees - yes we have an integral garage and also notice that the unoccipied bedroom over this is cooler than other rooms in the house. When we were recarpeting it a couple of years ago I meant to get extra underlayering installed to provide extra insulation but got overtaken by other events but I'm sure this would have helped, although it would also have meant having to remove the door and shaving a bit of its base to allow the door to open & close freely. We compensate by always closing the curtains in here at dusk in winter, even though the room is unoccupied and having a warmer duvet on the bed than in other bedrooms. I also put a hot water bottle in the bed regularly to keep the bedding and mattress aired.

Now we've got our heating on at between 17 & 18C hubby and I are too warm. We've got used to the colder temperatures. I think that part of the problem was that we've been away for a few days and the house was just so cold when we came in. The heating is going back to 14C - on the timer - I reckon if the temperature goes below that then for our health sake we need some heat.
