  • Ive got large concerns re this thread and the dont use gas/electric one.

I understand people really need to keep costs to an absolute minimum but surely the small cost per unit for gas is less important than the health of the people posting on here? it really isnt a game risking your health.

The way I 'use' this thread is to share ideas. It doesn't meant that I want to stay cold for the sake of a few pennies, but that many ideas in here are helpful when the weather is not that cold yet in past years I used to have the heater on and stay in t-shirt, for instance. Now THAT was a waste.

I doubt anyone here is going to sit there shivering and catching a cold. It's all a question of reducing waste when, say, fleecy clothes and socks etc can do the trick.

We've had the fire alight for the last couple of days, but tonight I thought it was hot, hot, hot, my cheeks are glowing. I was somewhat miffed to go upstairs and realise the ruddy heating had been turned on.

I suspect some little tyke has turned on the hot water, to wah off all the gunk in their haor and faces, and hit the CH button instead. We have explained to all of them that heating is costly and that we are trying to save pennies, but being small peoples, they don't really get it.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

No. Neither is it big or clever. I get the impression some people see this as a competition.

My dad's bigger than your dad?!

I dont see it as a competition AT ALL, i see it as CAN I ACTUALLY AFFORD to put the heating on, which at the moment is a big worry. I dont enjoy being cold one bit

I think for some people on very low incomes, the EAT versus HEAT option is a very real one so we should be sympathetic to their dilemma. In such cases, the best advice is to reinforce the message of wearing several layers of light clothing to keep the body warm, especially protecting the extremities such as feet, hands and heat when a lot of body heat is lost. Also to have regular hot drinks and keep moving a regular intervals to keep the circulation going.
  • My heating has been on for 1 month now.
My normal daily usage was 9KWh per day (around £0.29)
Since putting on the heating it has jumped to 19.7KWh per day (around £0.61)
So i'm paying an extra £2.24 per week.

£2.24 per weeks saves money on lemsips.
Lets get this straight. Say my house is worth £100K, it drops £20K and I complain but I should not complain when I actually pay £200K via a mortgage:rolleyes:

How do you work that out? I just try to keep the costs down but I actually have no idea how much I am saving

I have the heating on low most of the time as I am at home with my daughter during the day. I was absolutely freezing in bed last night, it took me about an hour to warm up, it was horrible. I had 2 blankets on top of the duvet, I was wearing pjs, socks and a fleecy top. I was thinking I'd need to go out and buy a sleeping bag today but in the cold light of day.... There is a vent in our room that is like having a window open. I have no idea what it is for and I am reluctant to cover it over for safety reasons. Any ideas anyone?

Lalaladybird hi, you don't need more blankets, you really need a hot water bottle. It'll really help to warm you up.
I went to bed without mine the othernight, thinking I'd be ok, but was still awake an hour later. My nose hurt it was so cold.

I think once you get cold it's hard to get warm again, no matter how many blankets you have on.
I got a white waffle weave blanket, and use it between me and the duvet, tucked in all round till I'm trapped in the bed  - sleep really well with that and the water bottle.

As for the window vent, as long as there's no gas likely to get into the room, close it if you like. You'll just have wetter windows in the mornings but you can soon dry them out. ;)

DD said she wants some earmuffs, and I think I might get/make myself a bedcap :D

  • Thanks barneysmom, the vent isn't actually over the window. It is in the wall  There is an unused chimney behind that wall I think:huh:. But I will use a hot water bottle :o
