We made it to November 1st :)

It started getting chilly an hour or so ago and we turned the heating on, but I'm still sitting here curled up in a fleece as I like the 'snuggly-hibernating' type feeling it gives me!

Right now, I'm wearing my underwear, a T-shirt, a woolly fleece and a cardigan, a scarf, jeans, knee-high tights and bed socks, clutching my hot (now cold) waterbottle!

My house is not insulated and had no double glazing (can't afford it), and so I'm trying to see how long I can last without putting the heating on - it's VERY tough. :o
I've found that if the weather is bad and a house hasn't had heating on for a while it can get really cold and also feel a little damp. Sometimes just putting the heating on for an hour to take the chill out of the air can make a real difference.

  • we've decided to go with half an hour in the morning and half an hour in the evening and I'll keep an eye on the metre and see how its going. I stuck it on this morning (and it came on this evening when I was on my way home) but tbh its gotten so much milder that it doesnt really need to be on so I've switched it off again...think I'll wait for the cold snaps etc and then have it on then...I know its a lot milder cos im sat here without my gloves blankets and hot water bottle to keep me cosy!

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! I forgot how cold this house can get in the winter. I need to do something with gaps/holes, I've had the heating on almost constantly apart from when I'm asleep.
One day I might be more organised...........

lil_me - I was in B&Q today (picking up my utility room sink at last  ) and they've got lots of stuff on offer - draught excluders, lots of types of loft insulation (they even stock the sheeps wool stuff now), pipe lagging, hot water cylinder jackets, radiator reflector foil, so it might be worth looking to see if there is anything that would help.

I've had my leccy bill today and it's about ONE THIRD higher than for the same period last year - ok it's an estimated bill, but still. :o Also it's been very cold and wet here in London today. Came home at about 6pm and put a heater on, on low, which is by me now and timed to go on/off every half hour.

I don't have central heating as it aggravates my sinus condition. I have a small wall mounted gas heater but this is so old that the last servicing declared it unsafe so now it's out of use, and a couple of electric heaters. I don't need to use them too much as I have a hot water/lemon flask by me and a frequent sip off that helps me keep warm.

Other than that I don't know what I could do. I won't make myself get a cold or worse just to save money. I'll do without other things instead.

  • I'm afraid I didn't quite make it to 1 November. The house started to feel very cold and even my dog - he's a corgi with a thick double coat - started to look miserable. I decided to put it on for an hour on Wednesday evening, then Thursday and yesterday I set the timer to half an hour in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening. I was out all day today visiting friends in a different county and wasn't sure what the weather would be like in Wiltshire so left the heating to come on at about 2.30 but set very low. Hadn't come on when I got home at 4.00 but it's on now. If the cold snap finishes I plan to turn the heating off again.

  • I put my heating on earlier as I had two pairs of socks on (thick ones at that) two tshirts a cardi and thick pj bottoms... and was still cold.. I'll be sensible and make sure I turn it off at night (timer is broken!)and use the 2p per hour heater in the bedroom (its v large room) ..... I can not continue feeling so cold.. its not healthy...

I mainly use my pc in the evening which is an extension that I use as my craft room and its only single brick thickness... I usually use a halogen heater in there as it gives me light as well as heat..

Just curious: As a 'serious money saving fan' and you really your namesake? (i.e. a millionaire?!)

Yes, I'm loaded. Thanks for asking.
  • I put the heating on last week. It is not on the timer though. I am just putting it on a couple of hours in the morning and evening.
