  • Last night I put the open gas fire on in the front room for a few hours, cos we were all in there and checked the meter activity, was ticking around at what I thought was an alarming rate. Thought I'd compare the CH, unbelievable ! Was three times as fast.

Definetly going to change our 'heating' habits.

  • Well - I made it to 1st Nov. I have put a radiator on in the kitchen and I think I am going to try and maintain 15 degrees in there. I would have put the gas fire in the living room on but the fire was so dusty and my little hand held vacuum needed charging so I couldn't clean it properly (was afraid the dust would catch fire  )

my heating went on a few days ago but I applaud those of you who are somehow managing without. I am sure that no-one wants to be cold and no-one wants a pat on the back. It is a question of survival for many and what folks need to know is that it can be done and that they aren`t alone

Heat or eat is not a myth

Planned to put our heating on yesterday morning, because of ds1 complaining about how cold it was when he gets up and get dressed. However, after work on Friday night, he took off to his girlfriend's for the weekend, so I didn't need to.
I was quite looking forward to having it on though, so I held out and put it on last night for an hour. Checked the meter right before switch on and then again as soon as I turned it off. We'd used one unit, so around 11kwh for an hour's heating. Scary when I think that without heating (just water) we were averaging 3-4 units a week

Well, after going into ds1s bedroom yesterday, I'm not surprised he was complaining about how cold it was. Honestly, he's quite bright academically, but I'm sure common sense is lacking:rolleyes:.....He has a small door in the wall to the loft in his room (you have to get on your hands and knees and crawl through) and it was wide open and blowing a hoolie in there:rotfl:

Anyway, haven't had heating on yet today, and won't use it unless it gets too cold this evening. For us I think an hour a day is just about what we can afford, so I'm still going to be very careful with it.

    Hi Kittie

I do sometimes wonder if there could be a thread or summat whereby people who are having this "heat or eat" choice could put up exact details - ie: indoor temperature, what their home is like (size, construction, etc) and their Budget (to "prove" that no money was going on things like smoking, running cars around unnecessarily, debt payments, particularly high accommodation costs, etc) - ie "proving" that they arent being profligate with money by anyone's standards - but still cant afford enough heating in their homes.

A sorta way of putting pressure on the powers-that-be.

Part of me wonders whether that would or wouldnt be a good idea - in case of people putting on there that their budget included that sort of expenditure - in which case a lot of people will instantly "turn off" and think "Well - of course - its their own fault - as they are spending money on x/y/z". I dont know if there is any way to ensure that such "discretionary" spenders didnt put their circumstances on there - only the ones who have made all possible attempts at economising and still dont have enough money. I say this - as I have seen people carry on smoking/having frequent holidays/etc - but still insisting they are broke.

    Dont know what people think?

  • Wear A Vest!!! :rotfl: :rotfl:

Seriously, I've been thinking about this today. I think there are two reasons why we've all become accustomed to a warm house. Firstly, just that .... we've got used to living in a "warm" house (try living in a house with no DG, old, draughty windows and no boiler!) and secondly, we don't wear "a vest". The reason I was prompted to think about this is ... that I've got used to wearing a cotton T-shirt. It occurred to me today that this is the modern equivalent of wearing a vest! :rotfl: :rotfl:

I have "polo" shirt (also cotton) on top of my "vest" and a thin "polar" fleece on top of that. The result is that I'm warm as toast - although it's not cold today, here in Sussex anyway - but I feel no need to put the heating on. Indeed ... I've been continuously putting the fleece on and taking it off again, all morning!

Get "a vest" is my suggestion ;)

Well done to all of you who managed to last out till 1st Nov :T ! I caved in when my grandkids visited a couple of weeks ago - youngest was 6 weeks old so no way was I allowing him to be in a room where the thermometer showed 16 degrees.

But even though it's technically been coming on for 2 hours in a morning and 4 hours in the evening, it's still only set for 18 degrees and hardly kicks in at all :j . I think we can manage between 18 and 20 for the majority of the winter now - though the timings may have to be adjusted if we have any further really cold spells. Both sofas have got fleecey blankets on the back of them - so it's a case of 'snuggle up' if you're cold. E-on get quite enough of my 'hard-earned' and I'm not having them get more than I can help!

Have to say that using the slow cooker and the oven make the kitchen feel much warmer - may have to start baking every day  .

Suzkin, just don't make yourself ill.
Have a few hot drinks or a small sherry to warm your blood and get under a blanket.

Hello! :j Small sherry! (lol) I cannot afford it! I know this is going to sound not very nice, but over the weekend I've been sleeping in my day clothes (all alone, of course...), as it's simply too cold to change! Having said this, I've also been having some nice hot baths. :o
