It does make me wonder why we are living in places which are so cold. I mean if the gas, oil and electricity ran out what would we do? I don't see any other animals dependent on heating.

This seems to be a major flaw in humans - we are not very self sufficient compared to other creatures. If we didn't have heating would we evolve the ability to cope with the cold?

On the other hand, I read that the Australians are the most scared of global warming. There are some places on Earth where it is so hot that you absolutely need the air conditioning. What are we (humans) doing there?

    (just my rambling thoughts)

But they're not cold, are they? It's just that we've come to expect "something warm" and that something is actually warmer than what we need ....

We didn't quite make Novermber - we put ours on on Thursday.

It was between 13-14c and felt toooooo blimming cold for me!

Mind I blame some of it on my work as I spent four nights and three days there last week and the heating is on for the clients. It was bliss not to be cold but I felt it twice as bad when back at home!

We've now got it set at 16c and it feels lovely in the morning. :)

Ceridwen - that's a good point but then I guess it is about priorities for most people.

There are definitely people struggling to get by and making choices between eating and being warm, but for most of us it is a case of having too many financial balls in the air and deciding which ones we prefer to drop imo.

We don't drink or smoke for example, but we do other things with our money that are not necessities and yet, they are things I am happy to swap a warm house for.

I'm not being very clear! I am trying to say it is all subjective, and I would say few on here are making life or death decisions when it comes to allocating their spending. However, there will be many more who are simply struggling with the rising costs, and yet cannot be called destitute nor reckless?

How would you class debt repayments for example? They have to be paid and yet it can be argued many stem from non-essential spending in the past. So, if someone has been forced to take a lower paid job and is now struggling, are they discretionary spenders, or truly hard up?

It would be an interesting thread though, I agree, and may inspire some of us to manage our money better, as well as highlight the desperate situation some people now find themselves in.

Hello! :j Small sherry! (lol) I cannot afford it! I know this is going to sound not very nice, but over the weekend I've been sleeping in my day clothes (all alone, of course...), as it's simply too cold to change! Having said this, I've also been having some nice hot baths. :o

Oh Suzkin, I'm sorry you can't afford a small tipple.:( I found that just sipping a teensy glass does seem to get the blood moving.
I've often kept whatever tshirt I've had on during the day and bailed into bed in it, when it's been very cold. I shower in the morning anyway.
I can't get out of the bath once I'm in, so have been showering for a year now, so you're one up on me there.:D
    Take care.

Hiya all, still no CH on, but the coal fire is great. We have stocked up on logs to burn mostly to keep the coal bill down. We also boost the heat in the morning with an energy save 2p an hour electric heater. I think it is a good idea to put some throws around the sofa (see someones earlier post). The girls of the family have also got hot water bottles out. I have also bought Options hot chocolate. Any more usefull idea's? I should think we will put the heating on soon.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.

Here in London the cold snap of the past few days seems to be over - I hope it holds off for a while, as I'm currently sitting in my living room in short sleeves without the heating on and not feeling cold at all :) :T

Been fairly warm here today - not at all like yesterday! So I only put the heater on for an hour in the morning while I washed and got dressed, but it's been off since and I'm warm as toast just by drinking tea and wearing my faithful fleece.:A
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

A steady stream of hot drinks! I've been using my hot waterbottle for a few weeks now....I'm even thinking of creating some kind of hammock/string type thing so I can carry it around with me, to free up both hands (lol).
  • No heating on yet. This time last year me and the OH were living in a flat with no heating and so got used to seeing our own breath on a regular basis. (Very unhealthy I know!)
We have since moved to a much nicer flat and just had a new boiler but can't really bring myself to put the heating on just yet.
We have a nice fleecy blanket for the sofa and wear extra clothing if feeling a bit chilly. I have now realised that thick socks really do make a difference!

The stage before main heating is a little portable Halogen heater I got last year. Even that is still packed away. :D
