TheBees - yes we have an integral garage and also notice that the unoccipied bedroom over this is cooler than other rooms in the house. When we were recarpeting it a couple of years ago I meant to get extra underlayering installed to provide extra insulation but got overtaken by other events but I'm sure this would have helped, although it would also have meant having to remove the door and shaving a bit of its base to allow the door to open & close freely. We compensate by always closing the curtains in here at dusk in winter, even though the room is unoccupied and having a warmer duvet on the bed than in other bedrooms. I also put a hot water bottle in the bed regularly to keep the bedding and mattress aired.

If you're good with DIY and height in the garage permits it, you could always lower the ceiling in the garage and pack the space with extra insulation as well ;).

I do not have central heating and never had central heating for 18 years! At first i felt the cold now i do not feel the cold at all - when i walk into a place with central heating on i feel sick". I have never had a cold or serious illness either in those years-that was till i changed my job an now work in an office that is like a sweat box- the germs breed in there, everybody is coughing and sneezing even in the summer!!
I think people these days are so used to Heat that they dont know any more when its cold or not?? I have a coal fire and this only goes on when its below freezing as this is only when i feel the cold- in my house..I have felt like getting central heating in - due to i am getting older and i may need it -but due to the climate change and the planet getting warmer i am wondering if i should not bother? And get air conditioning instead?

You could well be right at that and I suspect that it's the body's natural ability to acclimatise to different situations. When I moved to the Gulf back in the 90's I found it exceptionally hot for the first few days. However I got to the stage in the height of summer where everyone else stayed indoors with the AC cranked up, but I'd be outside (in the shade for the most part) loving the 50c+ heat. The local US Navy blokes were still running in that heat with a full pack on their backs:eek:.

I did notice though, when on a cruise down the Nile in December 2005 that whilst the English were strolling around in vests, shorts etc., the local guides were in leather jackets, jumpers and scarves and they were shivering .

I have always thought and I could be totally misguided  that it's not so much whether you are in too warm a place or too cold - it's the moving between extremes that causes the immune system problems.

Unfortunately my health problems these days include getting false sensations from my various 'bits' - so I will often feel chilled to the bone when everyone else is quite comfortable - hence I am sitting by the stove whilst DH is upstairs in his unheated office..........

    Oh well :D.

Lots of complaints from DS1 again this morning when he got up for work. He's OK during the night now, as I've put a couple of blankets on his bed. He was complaining about having to get out of bed and get dressed in the cold. It is justified, as his bedroom is right at the tiop of the house. It's a 3 bed mid terrace, but on 3 floors, with just his bedroom and the loft on the top floor.
So, it's been a good challenge, but we'll end ours now and put the heating on tomorrow morning - Ahhh bliss :D

Thank you to all those that have been holding out too. Without the support and knowing there were others here in the same boat, I really don't think we'd have got this far:T
  • its so cold here, the thermometer said 10deg downstairs this morning .i think im going to put the heating on once children get in from school for a little while as they are now starting to feel the cold even with extra clothes on

No. Neither is it big or clever. I get the impression some people see this as a competition.

I suspose if its only themselves its a free country, but I imagine children & elderly relatives freezing.

ALSO, I could be wrong, but are they not making their houses damp?
  • You are correct mrsE. Until the heating went on here the upstairs was starting to smell distinctly musty. also the bathroom never dries out after showers with out heat. It is ok in the summer as I keep the windows open all the time. I hate being cold more than anything and we have had the heating on some of the time this week. It is only set at 17 degrees but when it is switched on it is firing all the time so cold enough.
