  • I spotted a couple of tents with lights pitched up on the beach at around 4.30pm, they looked to be in good condition so I cannot believe they belong to the homeless.
I used to see a tent on Chalkwell beach during the heatwave this year when I walked along there very early in the morning. Seems like long ago now!

It is much milder here today. Such a relief from the cold weather.

Light showers, breezy and 12/13 degrees here in North Yorkshire - we even had a burst of sunshine!
I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

One advantage of being older is the skill and ingenuity build up over the years using up bits and pieces of food leftovers.   January is usually a particularly good month for this and it,s surprising what tasty meals you can end up with.

A recent mixture here was some cheesy bubble and squeak with a portion of last January,s leftover Burns Night frozen haggis mixed in and it was surprisingly tasty.   All parents should definitely teach their children how to cook as a basic life skill.   Knowing how to use up leftovers in an innovative  way can save so much money, especially when times are hard and having the ability  to produce basic recipes soon gives the confidence to become more innovative.

Over the years I've taught my husband to cook and now I'm proud to admit he's a far better cook than I am!

Back to title..heating on or off?
I'm still managing to wait until about 3.30pm before putting heating on.
Keeping busy and walking a lot helps 👌

Still on - but we've turned down the TRVs in the living room now the cold snap appears to have gone.  The ones in the bedrooms are on as low as possible so barely register, but I'm reluctant to turn them off altogether yet since the spare rooms are prone to mould, despite daily ventilation.

Funny you should say that....I am feeling particularly content this evening for various reasons, one of which is that I have had 3 large batch cooking sessions over the past 2 weeks that have left my home totally reeking but has given me a stash of meals that will see me through this cold weather if I want a hot meal. So I had very mixed feelings when I cleaned down my hob again this afternoon, whilst I'm grateful to have a lovely stove etc I don't want to actually have to use it until next autumn if I can help it. I was wondering whether I could buy a hood to cover said gas stove with - the technical term I believe is "noodle" - but then realised the 2 chopping boards I have from leftover work surface do the job nicely. The trauma of cooking is temporarily abated, and the space is now reserved for candles :) .

Back to heating: it was wonderfully mild and dry today, but the temperature has now dropped to 5degC, so the heating has kicked in. December's bill exceeded £300 which I know is not high by the standards of some - but when I bought my home 5 years ago the previous owner's bill was around £1,000 a year and I was pleased to slash it down to £750 in the first year. How times change!
No man is worth crawling on this earth.

So much to read, so little time.
  • Your “noodles” are different sizes! Jeez I couldn’t bear it 😯 ha haa!
I'm unsure about my spine, I think it's holding me back.

Yes, they were offcuts from my sinks and have cost me no extra. I like to think it is MSE :) .

If you happen to have a third one, whatever size, they magically become a graduated set.... the candles set them off very nicely.
