  • DH just came in and asked if he should turn the heating on as I was sitting under a blanket on the sofa. I told him not to touch it. The heating only comes on for a couple of hours in the morning and evening even though there is freezing fog outside.

I did offer to find him a blanket or let him share mine.

50000 steps? I walked 10 miles and did half that, either your step counter is on the fritz or your idea of a short walk is a bit bonkers.
I've only done 50,000 steps this whole week, obviously. Which is very low for me.

@Spies, some other people get nowhere near this. Most people will agree a 10 mile walk is not one they can fit into everyday life, 10 kilometres is good enough. If you're consistently scoring over 70k steps every week, you're doing well! A good walk a day and layering seems to be keeping me warm, but I do have the heating on as well.

I was listen to Crowd Science whilst up late last night. They were talking about the concept of "build tight, ventilate right" and the PassivHaus. An architect was describing how she and her architect husband had constructed their home with this in mind (which I am guessing involved considerable outlay) and it always maintained a comfortable temperature at a low cost.

ETA: the website suggest that older homes can be retrofitted: https://passivhausbuildings.org.uk/projectbrowser.php . I am guessing that the costs for most of us are pretty prohibitive and we're unlikely to break even in our own lifetimes, its the next generation of owner that will benefit).
No man is worth crawling on this earth.

So much to read, so little time.
  • Re the step thing.  Me and himself walked the same distance today - pottered about town picking up chirissy pressies and had tea and a wee bun in our fave café - he’s done fewer steps than I have as he’s taller than me so my stride is shorter than his.

The distance someone can go in 50k steps can be way off what the next person can do, it’s not a reliable mileage calculator.
I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.
  • The heating is not on today yet as it feels much warmer to me although it says 13 in my living room. It snowed last night which turned to slushy rain and then snowed again early this morning, but it has all melted. My brother in south London had snow and it did settle there.

I didn't do the walking video yesterday although I did look up the American woman's name - Leslie Sansone. She does 1 mile and 3 mile walking videos if you can't get outside to walk. I used my mini trampoline instead for 20 minutes. It did warm me up so I am going to try and do that a few times a week or maybe even daily.

I will probably have a shower and put on the heating when my husband gets up.:)

The Leslie Sansonw Walk at Home videos are good   I used to do them regularly at home until  about a year ago when I unfortunately became too disabled. You don't need much space indoor and they do help warm you up and get your circulation moving !
  • There's another trainer from SE Asia who does walking at home videos on youtube - often with his mum. Always good to get the blood flowing https://www.youtube.com/@repstotherhythm3764
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!

  • This weekend I found that leaving the heating on longer, with the boiler modulating, cost the same as firing it up then switching it off & then firing it up again when temp dropped too low.

Been taking meter reads at the same time daily for a week & trying different things with the heating - every day bar Saturday used 4 units on the meter. Saturday used 5.

Still tallying up the cost on my spreadsheet, but realised I forgot to add the 5% vat. Not yet panicking at the cost & this freezing spell looks to be over in 7 days.
