It was very chilly today - plenty of frost on the ground even this afternoon - but wrapping up well in multiple layers really works! I have set my thermostat at 16°C in the main house, I tend to stay in my kitchen in the evening which I boost with the UFH, so it's lovely (albeit I am sure I will find it a lot less lovely when the next bill is calculated!). The sleeping bag plus 2 blankets keeps me warm when I'm watching TV in my snug.
I have a ceramic heater which I never use and am taking over to my parents later as they have their heating on full blast and still use a dreadful halogen heater on top, which is so bright it makes your eyes hurt! I have become sucked into the hype and just ordered them an EcoHeater as a surprise, that way they can be in separate parts of the house and still feel comfortable.I too have memories of skinflint relatives refusing to switch on the GCH, prices seems so inexpensive looking back although obviously things were hard at the time.No man is worth crawling on this earth.
So much to read, so little time.3 -
I was in work today, it was minus 5 and I really felt it today. Minus 5 and in a wet environment doesn't make for a happy workerThe ice was still on my car when I left at lunchtime - took forever to scrape it clear enough to driveIm only just now beginning to feel warm - stove has been lit since 4pmThe gritters have been out a couple of times already tonight so Im guessing we are in for a cold one5

As said, mobility is key. Doesn't have to be a 5 mile run! I'm pushing 67 but still go upstairs 2 at a time, do 3 mile walks, play in a rock band, gym. OK I'm maybe lucky I still can do these things, I'm aware of that! Now a gainfully employed bassist again - WooHoo!6

With the temperature being as low as it is, it's time to start wearing a designated coat indoors. Some of my chazzer finds will fit the bill nicely.
I keep on reminding myself, even for the winter this is exceptionally cold. It will be a few weeks here and there between now and Easter and will pass, we just need to sit it out. What I think is getting me down more is the lack of daylight hours, particularly when the sun doesn't grace us. In 20 days time (1st January 2023) we will have more daylight than today!

I'm up in the middle of the night but taking advantage of night time prices to charge my laptop/kindle/fitbit, run the dishwasher and boil the kettle for a hot water bottle (don't worry, off the boil will be used) to take with me when I go back to bed.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. The sun's been out and I think I’m solar powered (Onebrokelady)

Today the sun is shining - but it is so very cold and difficult to feel warm despite the heating being on. My parents live in Switzerland and despite it being cold, their house temperature (without heating) never falls below 18. Our situation is so different - our home was built in the 1950's and takes a lot of heating (and money) to actually reach 18!

No sun at the moment, forecast is a high of 0, a low of -4 and some freezing rain today, next 5 days have highs of 0 to 2 and lows of -1 to -5. After several nights below 7 in the bedroom I am rethinking a lifestyle choice which has meant for decades I have not owned a pair of pyjamas. It looks really cold out but it's time for a walk, just wish there was some sunshine.2

I haven't been feeling well the past week so I only went out for a short walk yesterday. I was getting in 115,000 steps a week three weeks ago and this week have only done 50,000 steps as a comparison!
I am paranoid about falling over if it is icy (broke my rib last year) so I might try a walking video on YouTube later. I forget the name of the American woman who does those types of videos but they are good for getting the blood pumping.
The heating is on today for hopefully an hour in the morning and then longer when the sun goes down. We are feeling warm enough in bed at night as our bedroom is south facing and retains the heat quite well. I think the evenings are the chilliest time.
I did buy us some sleeping bags so I will try them out later when we are sitting on the sofa.5 -
50000 steps? I walked 10 miles and did half that, either your step counter is on the fritz or your idea of a short walk is a bit bonkers.4.29kWp Solar system, 45/55 South/West split in cloudy rainy Cumbria.2
