  • This week I've used about 80 kWh of gas and 35 kWh electric. Gas CH and oil filled heater on in evenings.

We were on a 2 hour "paid not to use" yesterday 5.00 pm / 7.00 pm so sat in the dark but could use gas fire (even fridge freezer was turned off). this was our 5th one but the others have only been 1 hour. so a bit worrying that we had 1,000s of people cutting back on these schemes but still there were some power cuts.

  • I thought that too (planned power outage). @DigForVictory put up a link the other day to show times when your area might be affected, and the outages were in 3 hour blocks.

Would they be allowed to stretch it an extra hour? Or is it somewhere with an actual power cut at the mo, eg Shetland?
I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.
  • Power cut yesterday for 4 hours and it's off again since 9am

I'm ok but in over 60s property and many are immobile
:o . This is seriously worrying! Our infrastructure must have a written contingency for unthinkable circumstances.

@Reddleman79 - 80kWh sound like a lot but a back of an envelope calculation tells me that's 2.5 units on the meter? Which is about £27 on the coldest week of the year.
No man is worth crawling on this earth.

So much to read, so little time.

A friend's family have been participating in an Ovo scheme like this. They,ve been eating by candlelight and switching everything off .  I think for all their efforts so far they,ve been credited with a £4 refund.   I think the increasingly bitter weather has meant that many elderly or disabled people have felt unable to do without their heating as darkness falls and the thermometer is dropping.

Freezers are often fairly full in the run up to Christmas so should be able to endure a two hour power outage without too much problem just as long as you remember to switch it on promptly after the experiment, otherwise yiue food losses could cost a lot more then the refund you gain!

I'm wondering if this was one of the ewrly stages of the National Grid power blackouts about which we were warned if too much pressure was put on the system during a very cold spell?  Did you receive any advance text warning from your power company?
No warning been off since 9am and still of nearby traffic lights on a town centre ring road off so I think it's a genuine fault.
    Really cold now
