  • Off, still off for which I am grateful. Today we had beautiful late summer weather with plenty of sunshine down south, a perfect temperature to be out and about in.

Next week is set to turn cooler.
No man is worth crawling on this earth.

So much to read, so little time.

Currently 20 degrees in my front room, with no heating on. The back of the house is cooler at 17 but that's where we sleep so all fine so far in the deep southwest! Hopefully we will avoid the arctic air that's due to come down the middle of the country this week.

    Still off.
My bedroom is much colder than the hall (thermostat location) but i've not seen anything on there under 18.5 yet. Is creeping down and usually drops by 0.5 every few days when I look in the morning.
Winter duvet and long pj bottoms have been put into use.
Winter nighties and winter dressing gown not yet needed.

I did discover I cannot switch off the eco mode on my boiler, so still long waits for hot water, which get longer as the ambient temperature of the boiler gets lower.
I also can't partially open the taps to let it heat up at a lower flow rate. Partially opening the taps doesn't trigger the boiler, only when they are fully open does it start.
I thought of contacting my landlord about the eco mode issue, but will put up with it for now until the heating starts to be used which will likely only be a few weeks, it is October next week after all.
Perhaps once the boiler isn't cold all the time the hot water will come out sooner.

I too live in the sunny south of England ( Medway,North Kent) and at the moment so far have resisted the temptation to put the heating on.
Just got a thicker cardi out to wear, and retired my sandals to the spare room until next year :)

I do have a throw or two to put around my knees when watching tv in the evening so its still warm enough to do without the CH just yet.

Yesterday was a bit damp, as we had some rain,(grass has returned to green again, and weeds are starting to sprout up ). nowhere near enough for the heating though. I live in a very well insulated house ,double roof insulation plus foam wall insulation and I'm mid terraced in quite a sheltered spot, and the temperature in my sitting room is around 23c at the moment, lowest its been since early July. my sitting room is south facing so I get any sun for most of the day.
I have a temperature card on my mantlepiece which tells me how warm it is and normally it has to be 18c or below before I switch it on, and then its only usually on for an hour in the morning.
The longer it stays warm hopefully the lower my bills at least.

It felt nippy when I first woke up, the thermometer said it was 18.1°C in my living room without my heating on. I went back to bed for a lie in and put a cardigan on too and when I woke up again it's not too bad now the sun is out.

  • I agree Primrose.  My old house was west facing at the front, kitchen at the back was east facing.  The house we just moved to is SE facing at the front.  It's such a difference!

I miss the dawns now, unless they're spectacular and come right round (itms?), and the sunsets are almost over by the time I realise they're in the garden because I'm not used to looking for them out the back and the buildings out there swallow most of it (unless they're spectacular and fill the sky).

    The compromises of house-hunting... :(
I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.

We took orientation into account when we bought our current house. It's roughly north-east/south-west so one side gets a lot of sun and the other is much cooler. The colder side also had to be reglazed as the old wooden, single-glazed windows hadn't had the sun on them in the winter and had consequently suffered from the damp.
I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
The sun's been out and I think I’m solar powered (Onebrokelady)
