For those mentioning damp, I recommend a dehumidifier or two. They are not huge consumers of electricity and provide a little warmth. Ours produce enough water (chlorine-free) to water a load of plants including some that don't like tap water.

Mine just come on a night during Economy 7 time.
I have one here too, and, also use mine on the plants !

Yes damp is a worse problem than cold for damaging house structures so you,re right to settle for some heating. The issue of course for all of us is getting wet laundry dried when it can,t be done outside.washing items less frequently is one option I suppose but still a major winter problem for many.
We are lucky on this one as we have a utility where the boiler is housed and perfect for a pulley airer to go up on the beams. We just need to reposition a ceiling light later this week and then get it fixed in place. The humidity in the house had gone up to 70%, but with the heating coming on for an hour or so max a day/using the fire it is backing into low 50s thankfully. We do have a dehumidifier if needed as well.

I may have to try a radiator bed for our 2 girls. Used to have one years ago and the cats we had then ignored it in favour of piling on top of one another - these two are more solitary so may enjoy it more!

Thanks for the good wishes Alibobs.  Don't worry, we'll keep plodding along.  You're right, there are all kinds of conditions that make heating an essential not a luxury.  If the heating needs to go on, then it will and we'll worry about the cost later!  That isn't a flippant remark though as we do keep a close eye on the cost.  For this winter at least, we'll manage plus we've built up a bit of a squirrel pot by budgeting in other areas and any spare cash goes into that.

We've had the heating on this morning for a wee while and it will be on again soon for an hour as it's getting quite chilly.  Hardly surprising, very little sun today.   :(
Be kind to others and to yourself too.

Buckled and had ours on a few hours late this afternoon, gas price today is only 8.5p a unit so it's cost about 60p

  • ^ I might invest in a radiator bed for my cats too.:)

I saw this today and might start to switch on my heating in the next week or two.

The article is a load of rubbish unless your boiler ONLY does heating, a combi exercises the internal components automatically.

  • Heating OFF. Cellular cotton blanket on the bed plus a sherpa throw type blanket on top. All windows shut at night, a couple of small ones open during the day, until temperature drops in the afternoon. More autumnal food, using slow cooker.. Thermal tops or long sleeve t-shirts, cords. Getting chimney swept is on my to do list. Looking for a fire resistant hearth rug.

We arrived back in Yorkshire today and the indoor temperature was fifteen and a half degrees so the heating went on.

I'm hoping that now we're back, just being lived in will make the place warmer, but there's been frost in the Dales and snow in Scotland so I may be fighting a losing battle there.
