    Got to love free heatinf!
  • So the CH came on tonight

    NE coast of NI

The house has been getting cold these past few evenings , feeling damp. so on its gone - only for a couple of hours to take the chill out. We have lit a small fire in the lounge, just logs, to make it comfortable . Mr L is wrapped in a blanket, Im in my nightie, and mum looks dressed for an artic hike

For me its a question of finding a living warmth for us all
  • I used a room temperature app on my phone just now and it gave two different readings, 13.9 °C, but the "natural temperature" is 17.6 °C. This is in the morning so the sun isn't out yet. Bit chilly but not too bad here at the moment.

I am noticing my cats want to sit on the south facing side of the house so they must feel the slightly colder weather. I put their cat beds in a patch of sunlight in my living room for them yesterday.:)

We swore it would not be turned on until October, but alas a few days ago we gave in. The house was getting quite damp (North Wales, so often the case!) and dropping to about 16C. The temperature would be okay (extra jumper time) but the damp I don't want setting in. The thermostat is set at 18C and we have started using the fire too; which stops the central heating kicking in due to where the thermostat is located, so not doubling up heat sources when it is burning.

Yes damp is a worse problem than cold for damaging house structures so you,re right to settle for some heating. The issue of course for all of us is getting wet laundry dried when it can,t be done outside.washing items less frequently is one option I suppose but still a major winter problem for many.
  • We got our annual boiler service last week. The engineer struggled to get it started up then eventually after ages decided there were broken parts and other parts that were showing signs of imminent death!  It is over 15 years old so we weren’t totally surprised.
So we cannot put the heating on even if we wanted, until we have a new boiler. Fortunately it’s not too cold here yet, but the worst thing is no hot water to do the dishes.

Well be glad you,re getting a new gas boiler before these new heat pumps become compulsory. My OH has done a little research on them and reckons they,re probably very unsuitable for most existing homes in the U.K - and wildly expensive too so no chance of a financial payback within a reasonable timeframe.
Often worth having an immersion heater for emergency hot water back up.  Expensive way of heating water certainly, bit if you,re elderly or have young children or babies, sometimes convenience takes precedence to avoid making life a misery.

Off, but I do use my heated Throw and heated mattress cover and hot tub (takes cover).
  • I tested mine out yesterday at 6am, had it on for the first time since late spring and kept it on for 30 minutes, that was all it took to warm the place up sufficiently.
By 11am the sun is in/on the front of the property and that free heat is a treat !

For those mentioning damp, I recommend a dehumidifier or two. They are not huge consumers of electricity and provide a little warmth. Ours produce enough water (chlorine-free) to water a load of plants including some that don't like tap water.

Mine just come on a night during Economy 7 time.
