Good Morning ,still off at the moment ,even though there is a slight nip in the air,but I live in the south east of the UK and it doesn't really get too cold until around Nov/Dec, so fingers crossed.

  • I don't want to be wasteful and purchase a really, really cheap winter quilt and bin it after use, but am curious if i could layers of blankets/throws/thinner washable throws i am able to get into the washing machine instead.
I think layers are always useful: not only do you get more choice of thickness but if you find weight comforting, you have it. Layers also trap heat, so adding warmth. Oh, and a blanket or throw is useful on the sofa or if you have guests or someone gets Covid and needs to isolate... :) Or if there are children who need to make a den, or you discover a draughty window or door, or you have a power cut and need insulation for a hay box, or even if the duvet is too warm and you just want a thin layer.

Bit of a fan of blankets and throws, I am. :D
I used my chazzer buy green throw on the sofa for the first time yesterday. :)

  • It was a strange day weather wise yesterday. I wore my thin black polo neck jumper, a skirt, tights and boots but then it felt quite hot in the sunshine. The cafe I went to had outside seating and I then got chilly again. I then felt very cold when I got home and used my throw on the sofa before just getting into bed early. I felt almost like I had caught a chill. I eventually warmed up in bed with my socks on.

This morning I did get out our warm fleecy dressing gowns to spray a bit of Febreeze on them and hang them up ready to wear. I'm pretty sure I washed them in the summer and dried them out on the line so they don't need washing again.

    Heating still off!:)

I am afraid we caved here. We aren't using the heating in the day as during the week we are all out at work or school and we can manage the day and evening with blankets/bed early etc. But to get the kids up for school that 20-30 mins in the morning just to take the chill off is hard to do without lol. TBH in previous years we have hung on till Oct but we went to Florida at the end of August (pushed back over and over during the pandemic) so felt the cold even more when back in the UK. If it was just me and hubby though we would have left it off for now.

Also not using the timer so we can control and limit exactly how long it on for, hubby and I get up early in the cold and manually do about 20 mins so the girls get up in a warmer house. Then as soon as they are dressed back off.

Daytime highs of 15C here in Leeds so we've caved as well Alibobsy.  Like you, we're turning on/off manually as and when needed.  Usually about 20-30 mins mornings and then maybe an hour in the evenings if needed.  DH has limited mobility/emphysema and at age 81 needs the heat.

I won't be turning the heating on for a few weeks hopefully but I have just checked we have pressure in the boiler and tomorrow I will check the radiators for air. We're keeping 18 degrees inside the house, which we can live with.
