I was all set to put the heating on from the start of November but its been so mild I havent needed to!
In fact I still havent needed a coat when out and the last couple of days Ive had my back door open all morning (and I usually wind up throwing my summer duvet off in the morning coz Im too hot!).
Hoping I can keep it off abit longer as long as I wrap up well. Im wearing my super fluffy twosies and uggs , along with an extra cardie and that is keeping me nice and warm.
  • My dehumidifier is a Meaco ABC 12ltr model. It's quite petite but does a great job of keeping the whole house feeling nice & dry.

Heating has been on since 4pm. I turned it & the dehumidifier off yesterday morning as I went to stay away at a friend's last night & the house was at 15c when I got in at 3pm this afternoon. Both have been pumping away since & the house is feeling toasty again.
I've added an extra jumper & fluffy socks as I think I caught a chill whilst out & about this morning. It definitely feels chillier on an evening.

Poppellerrant, I definitely wont be going without heat, as an oldie I cant afford to get ill! but it is fascinating what causes the meter to move quicker! I have upped my direct debit now, if I feel I need to up it again I will make a one off payment to cover the coldest months. Its been nice enough today that Ive had my windows open to the house an air through.

  • nannyg, that's one thing I always consider - if there is a particularly bad cold spell I can always pay an extra one off amount to my bill for that month & turn the heating on more often instead of having to cover the cost with a higher ongoing direct debit months later.
I did this during the Beast from the East a couple of years ago as I was off work that week - I paid £50 in & then ended up getting a £50 refund when I left Scottish Power a few months later.

I think I would rather make a few one off payments and keep my direct debit down, I feel more in control of it somehow. Having said that I am careful with the heating, but it surprised me how much power things like the electric kettle take, but hey ho I enjoy coffee, so being careful I only boil what I need and not a kettle full etc etc

Thanks to poppellerant for pointing out the difference between kWh and M3 readings! Clearly I was confused before so did not offer st999 a fair comparison.

I don't see how you can only use 1kWh of gas a month to heat water. That is about 1 M3 a year, at a cost of about 33pence.

I have a new combi boiler that only heats the water on demand and for 2 showers a day and cooking that is where the gas goes.

The gas consumption of the boiler is 30 kW so for 2 7.5 minute showers that is 7.5 kW then the rest goes on the gas cooker.
sst999 - big apology for feeding you the wrong info! I took my M3 reading this morning and usage has gone up by 9 units for gas over the last 28 days - but unlike the previous 3 months, I have used the heating intermittently in that time. Using the calculation here, that comes to 286kWH. For the summer months, it was closer to 32kWh for 31 days, so still roughly 1kWh per day then (just 10% of your gas usage during the summer) and 10kWh October - November, similar daily usage to your home when you left the heating on low and it still took a while to get the house comfortable.

Are you entitled to any home improvement grants to make your home more energy efficient and cut down your energy bills? The unit price of energy only ever seems to go up these days and I can't help but think that energy providers are making a nice profit out of our older population.

I switch it on for an hour when I get up in the morning and so far I have not had to use it in the evening The morning is just so it warms my house up I have cavity warm filling and thick insulation in my loft so my house as its mid terrace stays quite warm and cosy

Thanks just bought one of these after following comments on this thread. My house although not damp as such and well insulated is old, built of sandstone and partially North facing so was needing something to try and reduce the North/South warmth divide without hugely increasing my fuel consumption costs.

I have to say I was fairly horrified at the humidity reading in my (mainly unused) dining room and how much water was collected in just a few hours that room feels warmer already:). I think it will be getting lots of use.
