Not to digress from the main subject, but I feel compelled to add that much as I loved the Victorian house I grew up in, I know it was the bane of my late father's life. We had no central heating, but free standing gas heaters and I vividly remember the cold and the damp. The main source of the latter were roofing issues caused party by an adjacent empty house, but also our low income and lack of knowledge of how to make the best of such a magnificent construction.Free thinker.:cool:0

Mee too - we had open fires, three storage radiators (the original ones with bricks in that burned out the elements if you covered them) and paraffin heaters that generated condensation and damp. I remember one going wrong in the lounge my Grandmother used - it was covered in small black greasy smuts that took my Dad and I several days to get clean and we then had to re-paint it. There was no heating in the basement where we had three coal bunkers and three workshops. It was a great house to grow up in thoughSave £12k in 2025 #2 I am at £4863.32 out of £6000 after May (81.05%)

Feels like Winter has fully arrived, been a chilly start to each day for a couple of weeks & I've had to turn the electric shower temp knob up to compensate for the mains water being icy cold.
Heating is now set to ON for the winter, cycling with the timer & thermostat. The dehumidifier is also not an integral part of the heating system - it makes the house much more comfortable & feels warmer, quicker. It's also set to ON & cycles around a set humidity level, the house is no longer excessively humid so I only empty it every two days.0 -
Starting to put it on in the evening an hour before going to bed to warm up my north facing bedroom and bathroom. Brrr!Free thinker.:cool:0

Heating is not on yet. The dehumidifier is on and as there is a load of washing on the drier the heating element is on so it dries by tomorrow but that is it.
The dehumidifier is on most the time we are awake and home during this time of year. It can kick out quite a bit of heat and the lack of moisture makes it feel warmer.I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy0 -
I put my new de-humidifier on yesterday. I don`t know if I need one but would rather have one than worry about damp and airtightness. What humidity do you set yours? I put mine on 550

It has a smart mode, a maximum mode (in case you have not been home for a couple days or something shop or gets rid of the moisture faster), has a laundry mode too. Usually we just use the smart mode either on 1 fan or 2 (how fast it does it).I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy0

pattypan4 I set mine to 55% on the dehumidifier & that shows as about 51% humidity on the hygrometers I have in the lounge & bedroom.
I leave it permanently switched on at the bottom of the stairs & it cycles off & on to keep the house at that target humidity. It needs emptying more often than every other morning if it's been wet outside.
It's honestly one of the best things I've bought for the house, makes a much more comfortable & warmer atmosphere & my electric bill has actually gone down because I've stopped needing to use the electric fan heater to give the lounge a boost during the daytime's. The fan heater is 2kw & the dehumidifier only uses 180watts on high fan speed.0 -
Not to digress from the main topic, but please could those posting about their dehumifier, state the make and model.
ThanksFree thinker.:cool:0
