    I think you may have a point. I am comfortable at much lower temperatures than my wife. The difference is that I spend a lot of my free time outside in the winter whereas she doesn't.

    At the other end of the scale, we both like to holiday in very warm places and adapt to temperatures in the 30s/low 40s quite quickly. The secret, we have found, is not to use air conditioning.

    Or there may be genuine gender differences - see this article on air conditioning;

    Women shiver at work in ‘sexist’ air conditioning

    Gender differences? Unpossible in this modern day and age, surely?

    Never-the-less, a female colleague of mine had a theory that men had evolved to run at a warmer temperature than women because they typically spent more time outside in the cold.
  • Oil-fired central heating on for first time tonight (unless you include the half hour we had it on pre-Christmas after the mouse/leak issue) :D

    Turned it on about six and will switch it off again at eight. Has taken the chill off the bedrooms but wouldn't want them hot - it's already given me a headache, lol!

    DH has been working outside in the rain/sleet all day so it seemed justified.

    Obviously we've been lighting one or the other of the wood burning stoves every evening throughout this colder weather ;) Cast iron rads still not fitted downstairs....will probably get done in time for Summer!

    Keep warm everyone!

    ^ Oo, cast iron rads are nice:)

    My heating has been on to about 18C since late November — but with the boiler turned down low so the radiators are warm rather than hot.

    A big improvement to indoor comfort since using a couple of rolls of Wilko white duct tape to draught-proof around the flat. Holes in the ceiling, pointless wall vent, trickle vents, loft hatch and warped window frames are now draught-free.

    The old wooden front door is also warped so I tape myself in each night using masking tape, including the letterbox and keyhole. (Just remember to untape the letterbox before the postman delivers)

    I have had similar evenings too. Then suddenly whilst snuggling I got warm and was toasty, as long as I didn't have to get up.

    thanks coffeehound you have given me a great tip with masking tape as have been wondering how to insulate my cat flap which has a gap round the edge where the brushes have perished. Simple and cheap and easy to install!! 10/10

    coffeehound has some good ideas re: use of masking tape, but I then started thinking about the vents (louvre vents etc) and why they are there. I know when I have my annual gas safety check that vents and various airflow systems are checked, which made me wonder whether blocking them however temporary may put you on the wrong side of the law or invalidate your tenancy agreement if renting?
