Wonder if Marcus Aurelius had central heating?

"With hindsight Marcus' greatest omission was that he did not impose Stoicism as the imperial religion, with as much rigour as Theodosius later imposed Christianity. Had he done so, the history of the world might have turned out very differently. But the fact that he was more tolerant might be regarded as another of his virtues."

    Hey PN
    ...
get your LL to give you the manual of the storage heater - this is your right! - however if they dont have it then get LL to buy you a new OF radiator.
I don't like to ask. I might have to use it if he found it! And it scares me.

An OF radiator would take up too much room in my small room.

    :)

A lot of people on here seem to have their CH turned up really high! 20!
I'd set it much lower. More like 16-17 and I'd turn off the radiators upstairs until about an hour before bedtime.

When I had central heating I used to have it on an hour in the morning to get up and two hours in the evening. No point wasting it.

The only other room that will be on is the bathroom as we have a ladder style radiator in their and it doesnt have a thermostat valve atached like all the others so i can turn it down or off:mad: but will speak to my plumber about this as its quite new, so hopefully we can get one soon.
Keep it covered in a huge thick towel so the heat doesn't escape.
  • lots of interesting things on this thread. i agree that living rooms shouldn't need to be more than 18 degrees or even less IF you're fit and healthy BUT going lower could be dangerously low for older or less mobile people.
just wanted to tell people that tchibo currently have draught excluders for less than a fiver. sorry i know it is more OS to make one yourself but at this price maybe worth it! last year i cut my bills loads by the simple measure of keeping the doors shut (turned the radiators off in the hall - why should i pay to heat the hall!).

I haven't felt the need for the heating on yet
but with lots of damp days drying washing is a problem
I've been ill for a week and the washing has piled up (me, OH, DD and DS)
so I've done a few loads today and am reluctantly drying it in the dryer
it is a condenser dryer and by leaving the garage door open some of the heat is coming off it into my study, so that's nice :)
and the water from the tank is always saved to bath the cat

Do you mean the tank in the tumble dryer?

Why do you bath him/her in that water rather than tap water?

  • We have no form of heating at all in our home either. It's a big old Victorian place......................... last night it was cold and I thought realy I should 'nt be complaining as when this dear old house was built it would of been like this all the time, cold and draughty in the winter and warm and sunny in the spring and summer.

Nooooooo, there would have been fires in living rooms and bedrooms.
These would be keeping it warm and well ventilated.
The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.
  • When my mum first moved into their house there was a fire in their bedroom, but they got rid of it when they got central heating. I would love one in my bedroom.
