well done to all still holding out, mine has been on a few weeks now, since iv been ill what started as a simple cold is now a chest infection for which im on antibiotics

yes its nice to be having no heating on but please dont mke yourself ill over it

sorry not a preechy post meant

I quite agree fizzel, with illness you should turn it on not suffer for the sake of keeping up with everyone else. I also have a chest infection at the mo, I have COPD and get them all too often. I have a course of anti-b's and steroids (complained to my doc the steroids aren't any good, I don't have muscles yet!)...but my back door is wide open all day. It's just that I can't breathe with the heating on and I quite like to breathe :rotfl:. Amazing how many of my family/friends come in and go straight to the back door to close it, they think I've forgotten .

    Hope you get better soon

we had a fireplace in our bedroom (shared by 5 little girls) and I only remember a fire being lit when we were ill. Coal was pricey then and had to be kept in perspective when all we could afford to eat was pigs head. We are the healthiest adults going now, I am 60 and none of us are the ill types. I put it down to good basic foods and no ch when we were young. The house was well ventilated though because of the fireplaces and all the draughts

Our living room was warm last night, just from the tv warmth (36" lcd) and I dozed off under a fleece. Then later off to a cool bedroom and a warm bed. Lovely, I can`t think of anything nicer

there is always one radiator on a GCH system that doesn't have a thermostat

Errr.....not in my house. All 7 of them have the thermostatic valve on them - though that kitchen radiator of mine is a bit problematic. When I have a new kitchen - whenever - then its getting swopped to a different wall and replaced by a double one.

ceridwen there is always a `slave` radiator somewhere as it is a safety device. It is often in an airing cupboard and must always be left on

Mine's in the living room (this house is 2 years old).
  • Nooooooo, there would have been fires in living rooms and bedrooms.
These would be keeping it warm and well ventilated.

True the bedrooms do have fireplaces in them but only the very well off would have been able to light fireplaces all of the time in bedrooms back then, coal was'nt cheap even in the Victorian days.
I permanently have a window open at either end of the house for ventilation so that's not a problem.
I would'nt use the fireplaces personally as I remember how dirty they can be and I'm not humping coal upstairs for no one.
As for today it's realy warm but extremely windy so we won't even need to think of heating.
We were talking last night me and OH and we both agreed that neither of us have been uncomfortable yet.We have managed realy well,it's becoming second nature to come in take off your coat and put on a cardi.Use a throw when you sit down ect.I'm finding my attitude realy has changed I now no longer feel that I'm deprived and realise how soft I had become.Basically my attitude has totally changed.
When it get's cold and it's nowhere near yet I will have some heating on but I have a tidy little credit built up and know that I'll think twice before using it willy nilly as I did in the past.Until then things will carry on as they have been.

Just shows how different peoples' priorities are...I would have real heating rather than a 36" LCD telly either on or off! I don't like tons of heating, but I do like some and could easily live without TV.

No heating on for me yet. I am finding it very warm when I visit other people who do have the heating on.

I'm in the south of Scotland, but very high up. I have my coal stove on ALL YEAR. Years ago when we had only 1 open fire for the whole house, my son was in hospital with asthma every winter and I had constant bronchitis. If you took your arm out of bed and touched the duvet, it came away soaking wet. So no matter what happens :) --my fire stays on !!

A bad asthma atack can be fatal and a bad bout of bronchitis can also be nasty.
I am in the South East and I honestly admire you. I think that I would just shrivel up and die in the cold and damp that you describe up there in Scotland.
I have Scottish ancestors but was born in the Southern Hemisphere and am used to warmth, light and sun. (A real weakling) :rotfl: I find the damp, cold and darkness very difficult to cope with, even here down South. I had pneumonia and pleurisy 6 years ago and was in hospital for 8 days. It was not a nice experience.
