  • i am quite proud of myself for not using my central heating as much as i would have done before i came on here. i have it on for 2 hours in the morning and in the evenings put the thermostat on 18. most evenings it hasn't kicked in. it seems the nightly baths and cooker seem to heat the house up a treat!

I would never have the dryer on. In fact when my parents moved in and bought theirs I had heart failure and made loud noises about it being used only under the pain of death:rotfl::rotfl:

I have just consigned it to the garage (next stop will be the charity shop) as its been used TWICE in three years - both times for guests who didnt understand the meaning of warm clothing for here and never bought enough changes for their stays (its Northern Ireland - it rains LOTS)

I've resisted turning my CH on till this week. I put it on for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. It takes the chill out of the house and enables me to dry some washing on radiator rails. I'm definitely going to be sparing with the on switch this winter but I'm not going to freeze. On the OS front, I use a hot water bottle and a blanket on my sofa when I'm in the living room. I wear layers and make soup etc. It's a sad thing when we have to scrimp to keep ourselves warm. Don't take it too far though, or you may end up with health problems.

No heating best thing about the menopause I never feel the cold.
  • I love my pulley for drying clothes. Im trying to use less gas and electric because I can afford to pay it now but it seems its only going to get more and more expensive and Id rather use less and get used to it before im forced to lol

Right - I've just worked out some personal "guidelines" in my own mind then. Decided the minimum temperature my house will be is 16C basically.

Its going to need to be at least that temperature if I'm ever to do any housework - as the best way to do it is with nowt on I find for some tasks anyways (like cleaning the kitchen and bathroom). I can do the rest - like hoovering/tidying/ironing fully togged up.

Guess I shall have to experiment a bit - thermometer sitting by my side - to see when it comes to general sitting round - either on p.c. or reading. I'll have plenty to wrap myself up in soon - an old feather duvet of mine and sheet has been fetched today by a LETS member, who is going to make a lapquilt from it for me - 'twill be lovely and snuggly. So - I'll be giving her LETS credits for doing this. That should be two of us sorted then - as, when she asked what to do with the rest of the duvet, I said "whatever you like - why dont you use it to make yourself one as well" - so I think she might be going to do that. So - wondering if between my lapquilt, a fleece dressing gown, Ugg-boot type slippers and a throw round my shoulders whether I would be okay without heating if I am just sitting round.

We live in the Northern Isles, there has been rain (even hail  ), a deathly cold northerly wind recently, and very little sun. It IS cold and we have had the heating on now for about 2 weeks. TBH I always wear layers, fleecey jammies, a vest etc, DS (16 months) also now wearing layers (incl tights and he is a boy!). I think its great for those of you who don't need heating on but remember some parts of the UK are a lot colder than others! I am energy conscious but it really is a necessity up here. If anyone is interested we only use 2 storage heaters (one in lounge and one in hallway), not the rest, and have not used the upstairs heaters and only had the leccie blanket on when my back was very bad (heat helps- alhough I am trying to use my oat bag now instead). I only wish we could dry our washing on the line, instead it sits on airers by the heaters!
This said I love where I live, its just a bit nippy.

I must admit I visited the Orkneys whilst on holiday back in '97 - I think it was another one of those wet summers . The tour guide was actually talking about summer in the past tense - it was August .

It's a wild and beautiful place (especially all those wonderful stone circles) and I can see why you love it - I applaud you for your hardiness though, I just couldn't do it :o.

We have only tested the gas CH, but the wood burner has been on - only when it is really cold and since we are using scrap wood it is not costing us anything - free heat, whey hey :T.

I'm recycling T-shirts as vests and leggings under trousers - together with some thermal socks from Primark.

Have had the heating on Kittie, but only to put pilot light on and test system and when visitors came one evening.
This morning at 7.30am was 6 outside and 12 in the bathroom, can just about stand that. Snuggle up in the evening with sleeping bag duvet type thingy. Mind you, good insulation so living rooms stay warm overnight.
Southern Electric Cold Alert thermometer says danger at 10 to 13 degrees...Warning at 15 degrees..... Ideal is 18 to 21...... Too hot 24 to 27
Trying for November lst to put heating on regular.
Day wear...double long socks, thermal vest and long johns, thick trousers, polo shirt, heavy wool cardigan, fleece jacket and cap.
Reckon I could get used to living at 15/16.

We haven't had the heating on yet - and more to the point, not felt the need to have it on as yet, either. DD has moaned on occasion that it's "freezing cold", but has since got the hang of wearing her fleece dressing gown.

I think we could have easily managed to hold out until November - if it wasn't for the dratted half-term coming up. With t'other half and DD being at home all week, we gotta pray for sunshine or the CH will be going on, even if for a couple of hours each day only....

I have GCH but haven't put it on at all yet. We also have a gas fire but NEVER use it as it costs so much to run. I have been layering up and it hasn't been too bad. The lowest temperature we have had in the house during the day is 16. DH is with me on not turning it on until absolutely nessasary (sp). We have 2 children DS (10) and DD (7). Ds has always hated heating on in his room since he was a baby so no complaints from him. DD is just happy to put on an extra jumper or her new fleecy bedsocks I got her (pink) and wrap up in the fleece my mum got her. Hoping to hold out past November 1st.
