  • The OH caved in the other day and now turns the heating on for 20mins at night before having his wash (don't blame him!).

The boiler turned itself on again last night and I woke up sweating, so had to get up and try to understand the boiler at 5am. Worked out how to turn the thing off finally!
No idea why it's doing that, never did before. It's not even that cold yet

    Mine is most certainly on.
And as I've just had a new boiler fitted with no timer then it's either on or off.

Boiler water temp is at 60°C, room thermostat at 15.5°C, but the heating is very nearly on all day now :/
  • OFF here, the house feels cold, the thermometer says 14degrees. I am under a pile of eiderdowns and am warm until I need to nip to the kitchen :) .

    Well and truly on.
  • Still off here, bedroom settled at 10 degrees and living room is currently 18 degrees but falling quite quickly. DD's had the fire on for 15 mins earlier (costs 15p per hour to run) and that heated the room up to 20 degrees but for some reason my hands are freezing so off to find a very nice warm blanket :D
  • Had to put it on last night, fearing a freeze outside, but also had to dry my laundry so at least got 2 uses out of it.

Warmer today at 6C outside and about 14C inside, so heating back to off!
  • Just did a bit of an experiment, last night I had the central heating on full, even after 5 hours my living room thermometer was struggling to get over 16C, the bedrooms were at 18C.

Just ran my 3KW electric heater for 15 minutes and my living room is a toasty 20C. As I spend most of my time in the living room, I can't see the logic in having the central heating on if I just want a quick blast of warmth. For a start I would have to wait hours.

I'd struggle with the maths, but 15 mins of electricity now and then vs 5 hours of gas on full has got to be cheaper?

Might try to work it out, I do know my electric heater costs about 45p an hour to run on full, and at least I know what I'm using and can keep putting 50p in my savings jar whenever I use it. The central heating always seems to be an unknown quantity, as it's going to depend on ambient temperature, length of cycle, etc. I do know when it's on full the boiler just fires constantly, which looks like a good way of burning money... Any lower and it doesn't seem to heat the house at all.

I've read it's far more efficient to use the central heating, but I'm thinking that's probably a comparison in similar times and if I had the electric heater running in every room.

I'll not use it all the time but it seems a viable alternative for when I just want a quick blast. The room seems to be holding the temperature pretty well now it's off (19C half an hour later). Hmmm....
  • it was 8 degrees in my lounge about an hour ago and alothough I was layered u I just couldn't get to feel warm, heating is on for an hour now.

what are the recommended room tempratures, does anyone know?

Think it depends on age, for small children and older people I think it should be 18C for bedrooms at least or 21C for living rooms according to WHO (world health, not Dr Who lol). Older people might actually feel warm when they are freezing which is why keeping an eye on temperature is important.

I think for people 16-60 it should really be whatever you're comfortable with. I can cope with 10C, and I think it's possible to acclimatise to the cold (I only put a summer jacket on until recently, while I saw people in thick coats and hats long, long before I thought it was cold enough to wrap up, I think from that my body's just got used to colder temperatures and 18C feels far too warm!
