My house too is very small and extremely well insulated.I am mid terrace and have had the walls foam filled and have around 6-8" of loft insulation..I made sure a couple of years ago when the prices started to rise that it was as well insulated as possible. My son-in-law is a surveyor and part of his job is to rate houses for energy levels and how much folk can save on various bits and pieces to help keep their bills down.He did a survey on my house and after various things had been done I have got an 'AAA' rating for energy conservation.I had a new boiler fitted as well which made all the differance .I now pay £43.00 per month to EDF which covers my heating and lighting.so I think I am pretty well covered for costs.I used to live in a very large rambling 4 bedded house that was a money pit to heat before my late OH and I decided to 'downsize' Best thing we ever did I think. No huge bills and a warm house in the winter.I have one double and two single bedrooms a reasonable sized kitchen and 12x14 ft sitting room.Thick curtains and a porch at the front and a conservatory off the kitchen at the back so more than enough room for me to rattle around in and I don't have to fret about big bills.0 -
I've given in and turned it on today. I was hoping to last a bit longer but I got in around 5pm and it was 12 degrees inside and I felt cold. I probably could have lasted longer but my classroom is warm all day and I've started getting used to the temp there being in the 20s.0

My house is a small mid terrace too, unfortunately my neighbour has just been evicted so have a cold house on one side.
I guess my bills aren't huge, really, as I don't go mad. But when you consider all I made from self employment last YEAR was £1800 and my working tax credits on top of that, nobody else's income coming in, heating has become a luxury I can't afford. I'm probably officially living in poverty though you wouldn't know it to look at me, certainly in fuel poverty. But I've been told I can't get free loft insulation because although I'm on WTC, I'm not eligible for child tax as well or disabled so like the dentist, prescriptions etc, I'm supposed to pay for it out of my meagre income...
Feel quite toasty at the moment, apparently it's 4C outside but am just not feeling it because I've been acclimatising myself, think I'll only put it on if I have visitors or if it drops to freezing or below outside. For sure, not using the heating is the biggest money saving measure of them all :beer:0 -
Oh my goodness, tonight has been a revelation! What the letting agent told me were storage heaters are actually electric radiators! With my work hours, storage heating is useless to me (besides being unaffordable) but short bursts of heat I *can* manage.
Looks like winter might not be as harsh as I though! That said, flat hasn't gone below 10 degrees and is usually 12 when I'm in and moving about. I work outside so can deal with that:AStarting again on my own this time!! - Defective flylady! :A0 -
I've put the CH on automatic now while it is cold at 17 degrees. To be fair it hasn't come on that often and then only for short bursts. The last boiler had no temperature control only 1 2 3 or 4 setting and when cold and I used to leave it on 1 all the time. It will be interesting when the bill comes in to see the difference to last year.0

Had my GCH on timed to come on at 6 am everyday ,turn it off when we want , now lit the sitting room fire ,I use 2 large lumps of house coal , then usually 2 logs and that will last till about 9 when I go to bed, so the open fire is very very cheap to use, plus all my wood is free.............
Very well insulated bungalow and holds the heat a long time ,we only need the one room of a night as the rest part of the bungalow is not used............
I feel very sorry for people out there who just cant afford to turn their heating on at all or for short blasts , we all need heat ..............0 -
The temp inside is currently 16 degrees and it's about 8 outside. I'm very fortunate that my landlord installed double-glazing last spring, so the heating isn't going on until it's REALLY cold in here, and that's going to be only the one radiator for an hour at a time if I'm completely desperate. "Heat or eat" is looking like a real possibility round these parts.
It might be my age but those fleece onesies in the shops are starting to look quite appealing....0 -
It is already there with me I'm afraid. CH only goes on for 30 mins in bathroom as it can often be used as a spare fridge/freezer. As the temperature goes down my clothing layers will go up. I just cannot afford to pay any more on heating at the moment.
Luckily for me I must be very warm blooded as don't seem to feel the cold as others do. The temp in living room is 17 degrees at mo - quite ok.Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, Do without.0 -
I live in my fleece onesie and it is incredibly warm.
I have put the thermostat on 12 degrees in our room, it generally sits at about 9 or 10 degrees but it feels like everything is getting a bit damp. Living room was 17.9 when I put the heating on but is now 20.4 and feeling a little too warm for me.
I am really concerned with the heating bill this year so I am trying to use it as little as possible.0
