I put the woodburner on tonight - which is essentially free fuel due to some trees being chopped earlier in the year. Do those with woodburners go scavenging for wood?

My OH works in bars and restaurants and there are always pallets lying around, so he throws them in the back of the van and takes them home. We never done this last year and stupidly spent quite a bit on fuel for it over the winter. So this year we bought a circular saw for £30 and not a penny for fuel so far...not a bad investment :D

  • Interesting thread, you're a hardy lot :) having just fixed my BG rate for a year a spending some time comparing what we used last year or so with now, we are being super strict now. It's come on a few times, but hot water bottles and the wood burner has helped us on the chillier nights, and during the day when I'm at home I have a bottle under my feet ;)

Had to put heating on yesterday again, because we had loads of laundry and it did not get dry out on the line. So it went on for a couple of hours, also in the bathroom, which gets very damp when no heating on.

Most radiators off, though, only the room with laundry in and bathroom, so not too much consumption.

Just as well, as this is DD's ex-room and DD unexpectedly stayed the night as she was babysitting nearby, so she slept in a nice warm room!

Planning to use heating only sporadically for laundry purposes until it is seriously cold, which is not at the moment. However I am going away for a few days next week and I am pretty sure that DH and DS will not be as frugal and will crank it up!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Oh yes - we burn anything that is wood. The caretaker at school kindly loads my boot up every week with anything wooden being thrown out and going on the skip..........hence I have 35 old hockey sticks 10 cricket bats and 12 rounders bats stored in wood shed :)

Still off here.......very wet and windy last 2 nights but gorgeous bright Autumn days which are unseasonably warm. We even still have bees buzzing around but things form them to feed on getting a bit scare now and think the storm winds forecast will flatten anything with flowers on:eek:

Still off...I'm not cold honest...I can put extra clothes on, use various alternatives to stay warm, hot drinks/meals/HWB/electric blanket etc...even the new cold weather plan by the Gov says if needs be just heat the living room during the day, a bedroom at night. But thankfully at this minute I am in credit on the utility plan and rent so if/when I need to use the CH I will. Its by being careful I am still able to do so and have a life.

An expert today on radio says it is possible to climatise to a lower temp for some of us. I had a visit from the housing association yesterday who said my home was chilly at 14c thermometer near the front door in the hall.

I was ok with the clothes I had on and as they arrived the gardener was leaving...hello...the door was open so he could run his cable to a socket so naturally it would be a bit colder than usual. Besides if I had not had to have a visit from them I would have probably been out somewhere.

Heating still only set for an hour in morning, an hour in afternoon, and 2hrs in evening. Did have to whack up the temperature this morning when got in for the last half hour as it was cold.

Took two hot water bottles to bed, still only the 13tog duvet on so can keep the 20 tog for when really cold, and still only got radiators on in the lounge and dining room if people coming (plus towel rail in bathroom). I'm feeling quite smug with myself as would normal have had every room heated by now in old flat, (however heating and building was rubbish).

Oh and still got some windows slightly open....but blowing a gale here on the coast so don't know how much longer I will keep that up.

It must be nippy though as Asbo-cat is trying to sit right next to me to steal my warmth, so I must be the warmest spot in the house until the heating clicks on.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

Mines still off. Putting a new floor down this weekend and doubling up on the underlay - I'll be closer to the light to keep warm.
One of the dogs woke me up with a cold nose in the eye at about 6:30am before climbing under the covers.. So i'm guessing he's getting cold.

Same here in Bournemouth. I've just walked the dog and now I'm positively roasting ! Managing to dry clothes by giving them an extra spin in the washing machine and drying in front of a south facing window.
