Undertaking isn't specifically illegal, though the nature of it can lead to a tug for due care and attention or careless/dangerous driving.
In the case of a solitary right hand lane 65mph moron on an otherwise empty motorway no court would convict you for undertaking in the left lane.
In the case of a congested motorway where a middle lane "moron" could have moved left 10 seconds before having to move out again for the next HGV, but doesn't so instead you dive into the left lane,c utting up the last HGV, drive right up the back end of then ext HGV and then carve in front of the middle lane "moron" to get ahead then you'll clearly be guilty of dangerous or reckless driving.
It's the grey area in the middle that you need to worry about.
I would also argue that if dealing with a foreign MLM or a foreign HGV, it is safer to undertake than to overtake, but I suspect most would take issue with that argument.
Anyway, to save me writing more about things that annoy me on the road, I'll just link you to my Middle Lane Owners Club site that contains "expert" driving advice from the kind of driver we all love to hate. Some of you might it amusing.0 -
Is it not easier and safer to just undertake if they clearly have not understood the rules of the road?
I have no problem with this usually so long as they do so with plenty of room. If they just move out without indicating to within inches of me then that's different. I don't personally see any point in signalling to move from lane 2 to lane 1 as the rules of the road are you go to lane 1 unless overtaking, and as you just overtook something and can see you have passed, and nothing's going to pull out into you, then not indicating isn't a problem.
I assume you are one of these morons then.
If car A is moving out from lane 1 into lane 2 then it should indicate. If Car B is in lane 3 moving in to lane 2 how will B know what A intends to do?
The chances are that B is moving at a faster rate than A - neither indicate and both crash in the middle lane...
You are also assuming that everyine drives according to the highway code and that you will always be 100% aware of everything that is happening around you - which would again assume that you don't get out much or are indeed a moron.0 -
My single biggest pet hate is people who assume indicating gives them right of way....
Had this a couple of nights ago where a lorry indicated and started swinging into my lane, despite me being halfway past him, with a car tight up behind me, and the reservation to my right. When I flashed and sounded the horn, I was kindly treated to the fingers and his horn for pointing out he'd been trying to cream me.
I dislike people in the slow lane when I'm overtaking who glance, see a female in a sporty car, and try to race me- seemingly they have a dislike with either a female or a sporty car overtaking. Very rarely will I join their game- I've spent too much money and time on my car to risk either it or my safety.0 -
I suspect it's more that they just realised they got overtaken by a female driving a Proton!0

Pet Hates
Tractors down country lanes and on DC between 8 and 9 and 5 and 6, I want to get home surely you have all day to move your tractor.
People who pull out infront of me and make you slam my breaks on, either wait for me to pass or speed up to my speed.
People on DCs who decide that my 2 second space i leave infront of me is an invitation to barge in thus making me have to make another 2 sec gap.
HGV drivers from foreign country who over take as not limited like Uk HGV drivers.
HGV drivers overtaking another HGV going up hill.
Thats as many as I can be bothered to mention.
Forgot
buses who think that its their right to pull out from a bus stop when your level with it.I all have learnt is from others on many sites.
Seek legal help if unsure.

This is again made worse and more dangerous by these fools not indicating.0 -

Thanks Lum- I forget now sometimes the Proton badge, as I've been driving various ones over five years..... they're fantastic cars, just sadly undermarketed in the UK.
Just remembered another dislike- people who suffer from premature ejac who think it's perfectly fine to keep inching forward while they're behind me at red lights.0 -
Can't stand people who don't use indicators. Only last week I had a car in front of me suddenly brake and come to a stop in the middle of the lane. I was like !!!!!!! Turned out they wanted to turn right but couldn't be bothered to indicate the fact.
People who don't indicate at roundabouts too. I come to a stop thinking they are going straight ahead, only for them to turn off at the exit before me.
Taxi drivers make me get stabby too.0 -
People who in a Q cannot stay in the same lane!!!
I always got caught on QBridge on M25 every friday, so I would alternate lanes one week 1 then 2 then 3, didnt make a difference still roughly the same time to get to destination.I all have learnt is from others on many sites.

taxi drivers. I think there should be manditory driving tests every 2 years for them, and double penalty points for speeding. I'm fed up of them (and others too) tailgating me because I'm sticking to the speed limit in urban areas.
I also think that they should have their taxi licences revoked for sounding their horn outside houses late at night.
They bleated and whined like babies about the seatbelt law when it was introduced in the 80s, how it would be unfair because they have to get out of their cars so often. I've yet to see ONE of the bone idle lazy sods EVER get out of his car. No. they prefer to wake a whole street by sounding their horn. even at 3.a.m
The urban speeding problem is becoming a real issue round our way, I regularly see cars driving past school areas at a minimum of 40. It's not just arrogant I'm-more-important-than-anyone-else-on-the-road sales homunculus-in-a-suit types, but a large proportion of increasingly ineptly-driven people-carriers taking their precious darlings to schools, whilst blatantly disregarding the safety of anyone else's children nearby, or close enough to dare to get in their way.
Personally I think anyone caught doing more than 40 in a 30 or a 20's plenty school zone should face an automatic 12 points and ban.
But then I also think that drink driving should face a manditory life ban.0
