does everyone automatically get an account opening confirmation letter? - i opened my account online on thursday 18th and have not received anything through the post though the account showed in online banking pretty swiftly, i opened one of these accounts a few years ago and got paperwork, info leaflets and r85 form from them a few days later.

i ask in case there's a chance our postman has mistakenly delivered it to one of my nosy neighbours and have got my bank details.

I received a letter and form to fill in but that was because I requested a joint account. Later I applied for a single esaver account and it was opened next day and no letter was sent for that one.

So I believe they only contact you if you apply for a joint account. :)

Is there any way of checking the interest rate of the savings accounts on Natwest online banking?

Yes at the end of the month when they don't pay you enough interest!

    Ha! How very true!

On Nationwide's online banking it now lists the interest rate on accounts, would be a nice feature for Natwest (and all others) to adopt!

People: If you did manage to open one of these before the rate dropped [STRIKE]then you should have two items of interest showing this morning under "view full statement"

"INT 30OCT NET[or GRS]" and "INT BONUS"

If you only have the first of these it suggests Natwest won't have applied bonus interest and you need to contact them about it.

[It's happened to me and my account was opened and funded by 29 October][/STRIKE]

I suggest first asking them to confirm which rate they think the account is on [STRIKE](and then take it from there)[/STRIKE]

I've spoken to them and they confirm the bonus is payable for accounts opened between 17th and 31st October but as per the offer terms (which I forgot about) 'Bonus' interest should only be added the first time after one full month of account opening - and at the same end-of-the month along with standard interest thereafter. So at the end of next month all interest will be included.

The account I applied for never showed up on my online banking and I didn't get a letter. I called NatWest and as it is an online account they couldn't do anything apart from suggest I apply again. So I did.

Can't say I'm very impressed with this impossibility of following the account opening procedure.
But that's supposed to be the point of an online account. All the work is done by you and the computer, so the marginal running costs are close to zero.

Those who want customer service will pay for it through lower interest rates.

That includes paying for their mistakes - but isn't that always the way.
