• Evening everyone, I have been reading up on alcoholism today and did a test which indicated that i am alcohol dependant (not really surprised but did feel very ashamed that I have sunk to this level :o) I just need some advice please if anyone can help? here goes the confession - I drink usually 5 or 6 days a week (sometimes every day) and usually a bottle of wine sometimes up to two :o - my question is will it be safe for me just to go cold turkey or am i risking serious side effects (have been reading heart attacks etc...) should I instead reduce the amount gradually over a period or what? I am this evening suffering palpitations and anxiety which I have also read are side effects - why oh why did I ever start drinking again after my pregnancy I am so mad at myself:mad:

Hope someone has some advice thanks in advance :)

The risk of you having a heart attack is statically very small. The risk of you not stopping drinking and then dying from chronic alcohol abuse some years down the line is much higher.
See a doctor TOMORROW and be honest with him/her about exactly how much and often you are drinking. Ask for help.

Alcoholism is an illness - it is nothing to be ashamed of. You don't have to broadcast it to all and sundry, but please be truthful with your GP.

Good luck.
• I have also wondered about giving AA another try, I went to one group a couple of years ago but didn't like it, the problem I have is that even though my OH knows how much I drink he thinks I can do this on my own or just with his help but I CAN'T or I would have already! whenever i mention that i might go back he talks me out of it :(

Morning all,

Sim, take 365's advice and get this book The Author, John Coats is a counsellor, addiction key worker that actually used to have a drink problem (so refreshing, better than having a key worker that doesn't understand the illness). He used to be my friends keyworker in rehab and she had his book which she lent to me, it had such an impact at the time that I emailed him via the publishers and I actually got a reply from John Coats himself!! Fantastic book, it does go through the AA steps but you don't need to go to AA to understand it, as it's basically his journey from the beginning and how he got through each step (I actually welled up on the train at one point!). Good luck Sim xx

Could I join the 4 day challenge please. I have got completely wasted for 3 days now, I have the shakes today, look like sh!te and feel pretty crap, didn't sleep at all last night. This has to stop and it stops here. I've already told the guy at work that is the recovering alcoholic that I need to talk to him today so I know I have support there :)

Budge, excellent news about DS :D

Really gotta dash, start work in 20 minutes

xx

That's the crux of it for me.
However bad it got, it was only going to get worse, not better.

I didn't want to leave my kids without a father. I didn't want to kill myself any longer. However, I had to drink every single drop to get to the place where I was willing to do ANYTHING to stop drinking. I had to be willing to do things I didn't want to do to stop drinking. I think my kids deserve at least that. However, alcoholism is a selfish disease.

Today I haven't had a drink - that's a good day regardless of other things happening

I've just seen a Shape yogurt advert where they basically nearly kill a guy with a flowerpot! What does this have to do with yogurts? And how is it a good thing?

Living Sober Sucks.

I liked getting drunk, smoking pot, doing narcotics and taking the occasional pill. I liked getting high. Knowing that I will never catch a buzz again sucks. Knowing that I will never drink again sucks.
At almost 5 years sober (4yrs, 11mos), I can honestly say that many areas of my life are far better, and I don’t ever want to go back to drinking. I respect myself and my body more. I respect my mind and my willpower more. I have closer friendships. I don’t have debt and unnecessary drama in my life.

:rotfl:

5 for October please Shaggy.

I've woken up at 5am the last two mornings even though I was sober the day before. Once I wake up I can't get back to sleep.

I have part of me whispering trying to persuade me to use this as an excuse drink tonight.

:wave:Shaggy, morning, have a good day!
