Alchera, no-one is saying you have to leave. We have suffered some unpleasant attacks on this thread & people are wary.

  • Evening everyone, I have been reading up on alcoholism today and did a test which indicated that i am alcohol dependant (not really surprised but did feel very ashamed that I have sunk to this level :o) I just need some advice please if anyone can help? here goes the confession - I drink usually 5 or 6 days a week (sometimes every day) and usually a bottle of wine sometimes up to two :o - my question is will it be safe for me just to go cold turkey or am i risking serious side effects (have been reading heart attacks etc...) should I instead reduce the amount gradually over a period or what? I am this evening suffering palpitations and anxiety which I have also read are side effects - why oh why did I ever start drinking again after my pregnancy I am so mad at myself:mad:

Hope someone has some advice thanks in advance :)

Pen, would you put me down for 3 nights on your challenge, please (assuming you allow that). You are a star doing this for us. It helps me stick to my plans if I've told someone and it doesn't work the same in RL. I'm going off for a short holiday on Thursday but I'll try to do Mon-Wed. I managed lunch today with San Pellegrino so hopefully can manage tomorrow night as well. Back later, no plans to drink this evening.
P.S. Sorry your day has been bad, enjoy your supper and relax!!!
  • PS apologies for not contributing to the thread much atm I feel bad that all I do is ask advice and whinge about myself :o I will try harder I promise :) Thanks Honeybear I appreciate your post x

Hiya, I'm not sure I have the answers but feel for you so want to help. How do you feel on the one or two days that you don't drink? If you feel fine then it would seem likely that you are not physically dependent
on alcohol. I find that I can have palpitations and anxiety when I start reading about the things you describe. Its the worry and fear. Perhaps that is what you are experiencing now. Do get proper medical advice if you feel you need it though. Its easy to get mad at yourself I know but better to forgive yourself and realise what is done is done but now you have the chance to sort it out and the future need not be the same as the past.

    Hugs ((()))

From a purely selfish point of view 'whingy' posts as you put it (I don't think they are whingy at all!)help me out a lot. Reminds me of all the reason why I don't want to start drinking again so post away!!

I was drinking a similar level to you, sometimes considerably more, occasionally less. I had done a few months of cutting back, back on it, cutting back. When I stopped I just stopped. If you want to put your mind at rest then phone your local drug and alcohol centre and ask their advice.

    Good Luck with it all.

  • Thanks everyone, 365 did you experience any withdrawal?

DB I have cravings on the days I don't drink and find it really difficult not to drink, I argue with myself all day!! I would say the only physical symptoms I have are the palps and anxiety, sometimes sweats too :o

    You're welcome, hon :)

I admit a lot of what you say resonates with me. Not in a good head space atm but nice to give a helping paw to others while I sort myself out :)
