"Evening everyone, I have been reading up on alcoholism today and did a test which indicated that i am alcohol dependant (not really surprised but did feel very ashamed that I have sunk to this level ) I just need some advice please if anyone can help? here goes the confession - I drink usually 5 or 6 days a week (sometimes every day) and usually a bottle of wine sometimes up to two - my question is will it be safe for me just to go cold turkey?"
Please Shopahlictiedknow, DO NOT just give up - this can be very dangerous - alcohol withdrawal can be fatal, with seizures a possibility for the alcohol dependent. I am also dependent, drinking every day approx 2 bottles of wine, and I have tried to give up but have severe withdrawal symptoms - hallucinations, shakes etc. By day two or three this could progress to DTs and seizures with a very high fatality rate. Alcohol withdrawal is the most dangerous form of drug withdrawal, and it is the only type of drug withdrawal which can kill.
I have noticed since joining this thread a week or two ago, that the vast majority of ppl on here are alcohol 'abusers' and can stop without too many issues, perhaps mild insomnia at worst. However there is a big difference if you are alcohol 'dependent' or aka alcoholic as you are both physically and psychologically dependent on it and just going cold turkey can be fatal.
I would strongly advise taking some of the advice you have been given on here with a pinch of salt and going to see your GP asap - they are there to help and deal with all sorts of people with this disease of alcoholism.
I don't think any of us on here would advocate listening to us as opposed to going to see a doctor. In fact we have actively encouraged people towards doctors & other medical help.
It's true that we do have different levels of alcohol dependancy on here, which is why it's a Giving Up/Cutting Down thread.
We're a place where people can be honest about their drinking with like-minded souls. I don't think we claim to be any replacement for addiction treatments. We just support each other & some of us have forged good friendships that helps a some us of a lot.@ LBM = £15,872.65, now £10,819.82AF Jan = 7/? Rainbowdiamond thanks for the advice, I missed your post earlier, I have seen my gp once over and he didn't seem to think I had a problem and just advised I quit!! tbh he didn't seem to care less, he has however left our surgery now so I might see if I can get an appt with one of the other docs...0

Thanks that would be lovely0 -
I have also wondered about giving AA another try, I went to one group a couple of years ago but didn't like it, the problem I have is that even though my OH knows how much I drink he thinks I can do this on my own or just with his help but I CAN'T or I would have already! whenever i mention that i might go back he talks me out of it0

I think you should try it again. Worse case scenario is that you don't feel it's for you & don't go again.
I'm not sure what to say about your OH - ultimately you're doing it for you so whatever helps you has got to be a good thing, surely?@ LBM = £15,872.65, now £10,819.82AF Jan = 7/? Shopaholic At the stage you are at, I doubt AA will help much. As Rainbow said with the symptoms you suffer you need medical help. Get your GP to refer you to the local substance abuse team. ( I'm not sure whether you can approach them direct). Home detox is very good at giving you a start. 7/8 days on a reducing dose of sedatives reduce/remove cravings and also considerably ease withdrawal symptoms. Once 'dry' AA will be there if you feel you might falter.
