    Hi all,

I have only recently (last few months) realised that alcohol has wrecked my life for years...I am seeking help through an NHS funded alcohol counselling service and am due to do a home based detox next month.

My 'typical' daily 'liquid diet' has been around 2-3 bottles of wine or a bottle of spirits :(. I have been in denial for SO long, somehow convincing myself that every one else was/is drinking the same! I know, how STUPID.

I have been drinking the above amount as a 36 yr old female for the past three or so years and surprisingly my blood test came back ok. BUT when I try to give up, the wake-up call, I get extreme visual and auditory hallucinations, shaking, jerking, sweating...It's very scary, so now I am left with no option but to have a detox  I also have extreme cravings to the point where all I can think of is having another drink when I am drinking or not.

My questions: Has anyone here had a medically assisted detox and what was it like and was it successful?

Also, after being a successful person in my profession, I am now on JSA :(. Doc has just given me a sick note - should I apply for ESA?

Any help, MUCH appreciated! Thank you, in advance.

Welcome to the thread Rainbowdiamond I imagine you are in a nasty and lonely place at the moment but congratulations on taking the first steps to recovery.

Admitting the problem is the hardest part so well done. Seeking professional help is also not easy for everyone.

The home detox can really help. I think the course involves a 7/8 day programme of taking sedatives, These do two things, they suppress the cravings and stop the hallucenations associated with cold turkey. You must be determined though to ensure success.

I can't help on the benifits front as I have no experience. Someone else will be along later who I am sure will offer advice.

Good luck and do keep posting.

    Good evening,

My double AF challenge yesterday was write off. I didn't achieve anything and didn't do anything fun apart from playing stupid computer games, which doesn't count.

    Today's attemt:
    - A: worked 1.5 hours overtime (too tired to try to achieve anything else tonight)
    - F: Apprentice starts today :j

    Shaggy: 6 please :)

I am in a completely crazy position.....3 and a half weeks ago I won, in a national European lottery, and I am not kidding here - 3,5 million Euros.....

Of course I have stuff I want to do with the money.......

But one of them is buy and drink as much alcohol as I can get down my neck. :(

I have drank every day since I found out about the win...bar 3...

It's like "I have loads of money, no financial problems, so can celebrate with drink..." But I didn't HAVE any financial problems!!!!!

I am going to try a "posh" rehab.....but I still think that no amount of money will solve my drink problem....

    What do you guys think?

    Alcoholism is very democratic. Black/White. Men/Women. Young/Old. Rich/Poor.
The few alcoholics who manage to stop killing themselves with booze all have one thing in common. They really want to stop drinking, and will do anything to stop. If you would do ANYTHING to stop, then you have a chance. Good luck.

PS - I am naturally suspicious of these Europe-wide lotteries. Have you received the money yet?

From the Guardian about the Top Ten Scams:
    +++

    Spanish" lotteries

Millions of letters and emails go out, telling recipients they have won "Euromillones" ,"El Gordo" or other legitimate lotteries. But those who get the letters can't win as they have never bought a ticket.

That does not stop otherwise sensible people losing their heads - and money. One Kent reader filled in a "European Tourist Industry" questionnaire and was soon told he had won €985,000 (about £800,000) on Euromillones. He sent £1,950 to cover "transfer costs". Then he was told "it was blocked by the Spanish government" and that meant a tax bill.

"I then woke up. I realised there was no tax bill and the insurance protection payment demanded was a total phoney. I've written off the £1,950 - we live and learn," he says.

Easy to lose £2,000 to £20,000+++

Good luck. Stopping drinking is not easy.
I have to be vigilant every day, as alcoholism is a killer addiction.
