Hi appletree,
Well done for seeing your GP! That must have taken a lot of guts. Hope we can offer some help and support, I'm fairly new to this game myself but it's a real mix of people on here - some have totally quit, some trying to quit, some cutting down for a myriad of reasons - and they're all lovely, and a great support.
Shaggy - AF again last night taking me up to 10/10!. Going to try for as many as I can though, but a friend is staying, and brought some homebrewed mead so i may well try a tot... feel I should just be honest and admit that now!“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goals.”

I finally went to see my GP this morning and admitted I have a drink problem. I was given a number for my addiction unit, and am now waiting for an appt for an assessment. Feels a relief to finally seek help, but I am worried sick and petrified of what it will all entail. Please be gentle with me, and I hope I can in some way be a help to you guys too. x
Hi Appletree, I only joined this week too, and the knowledge that you can discuss this at length to people who know where you're coming from and get help, is great.
I'm just back from having a Health Check (booked in last week in the knowledge that I had to admit to a professional). She confirmed that I'm in A1 shape apart from the drinking. No damage to liver, heart etc. thank goodness.
Spoke at length to the doc and she agrees that if I can get it down to at least 3 AF days a week (or more) and less than 14 units, I would have nothing to worry about.
I've now admitted to two close friends (they were shocked!) so I really have to change my habits or they will be so disappointed and of course they now know my secret.
Good luck to you.0 -

I was scared as well about the thought about not being able to drink how I wanted, or not being able to drink at all.
That's because I am alcoholic, and I relied on alcohol (more mentally than physically). I wanted/needed my fix. The thought of having any 'fun' in life without booze was impossible.
Well done for reaching out for help - there is no one solution for everyone, and we have to keep trying until we find one that works.
I had to get help, and then change myself. I couldn't live successfully with wanting to drink and not drinking. I had to do something so that I wouldn't get the 'bells' because like many alcoholics, I'd succumb to them occasionally. I can now relax without alcohol, and sometimes have that peace of mind that a few drinks always gave me. However I don't have the headaches, regret, shame, embarrassment, and calories and cost that alcohol gave me.
It's not easy, but I feel it's worth it.
Good luck0 -

Just popped by to say hello and good luck to new joiners. This is a great thread, you'll get all the support and advice you want on here.
I'm a bit AWOL at the moment as RL is a bit hectic. I have people staying which means wine with meals. I'm not being silly but I'm not AF either. Hope to be back tomorrow or maybe Wednesday (not 100% sure how long they're staying).0 -
Morning :hello:
1 more AFD making 15.
ShaggyxWhat do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.0 -
