When I first joined you all back in January, I wanted to cut down my drinking abit, I knew it was getting abit crazy, Graeme talked of alcoholism and I freaked out to be honest. Dont get me wrong he never said that in relation to me, just in general.
I am so confused at the moment, because I have had a realisation that I dont have a normal relationship with alcohol.
I used to have. I used to drink or not drink with not much thought for either. But now I have to make an effort to not drink.
Its not a hard effort, I can do it. BUT I have to try everysingle day.
Everyday I have to say, 'I am not drinking tonight' I make a conscious effort to avoid the shop etc.
It didnt used to be like this.
I think if I carry on drinking as I do, carrying on without thinking about it, I will have a serious problem. If I havent already.

    Well done for this post.

For me this is how it happened. I had known for a while that I was drinking a lot. But to be honest it didn't bother me too much as I could afford it (on credit), and most of my peers were drinking at similar levels.

Then I decided to tackle my debt, found this website, then this thread. I joined a few challenges with my target at around 20 AF days a month. I found I played little tricks with myself to change days/or got so obilterated on my A days that I had a growing sense that something was wrong. It took about a year but I eventually realised I was alcoholic, then a few months after that to actually stop.

For some on here cutting down is what they wnat to do and maybe in fact all they need to do. For others, we know we have a drink problem and stopping is the way forward.

I remember someone saying to me about giving up smoking - just have a packet in the drawer and have 4 a day. I looked at her as if she was mad!!! Cutting down works for some, maybe stopping will work for you.

    Good Luck whatever you deciede.

ETA I agree when I started here I thought all the giver uppers were a right bunch of alkies and so far removed from where I was.;)

Alcoholism is an illness - undisputed fact.

One hell of a lot of people are very ill. I can't name many diseases but there are many that are totally devasting, cancer. MS, heart disease and plenty more.

We are lucky, we only suffer from alcohol dependency and the remedy is so simple - Dont drink.

I think this puts are silly cravings into context.

The remedy is simple, but by no means easy. Stopping drinking and staying stopped is bloody hard.
It's a deadly illness that not only kills people, but also destroys families and friendships.
Dying of alcoholism is very undignified.

Cravings are not silly - they are deadly.

This is exactly how I feel.

10 years ago I rarely drank at home, but over time we started to drink every now and then, then got to practically every night, but always the two of us. Then it got that I drank even when I was on my own and it has gone from being a glass or two, to being much more, and every day. With it being at home I don't think I realise how drunk I am like I do when I go out, because I'm sitting on the sofa not standing in a pub getting slurry speech and wobbling about!

I've not had any AFDs since my last post, but have cut down when I do drink, and even on Saturday night I only had 2 glasses.

I will try for AFD number 4 tomorrow.

What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.
