This story isn't quite as simple as that. He went away for a few days and a rouge estate agent rented the house to some Eastern Europeans who didn't know the house wasn't to rent. They paid a few months rent in advance and were a bit miffed when someone started banging on the door saying it was his house. Also its not like Eastern Europeans are hiding in people's gardens waiting for them to go and get a newspaper so they can dash in and take possession of the house in the 5 mins they are away.
While its still wrong the "squatters" were conned and you can understand why they might not want to leave a house they thought they had legally rented in a forgien land.

I would be more inclined to believe this, if the first words these new tenants said to Mr Pope weren't... "This is our property and we intend to stay here unless you go to court"

Why would their first reaction be to tell him to go to court - not simply to state they had legally rented the property (as they supposedly believed)?

I think some of these illegal tenants are just as aware of what they are doing as the 'bogus landlords' putting them there.

The cynic in me says that they are squatters who merely fib to say that they are innocent tenants who have been duped by an estate agent. Anyone can fake a receipt and AST.

Perhaps the advantage of this means that the accelerated possession for squatters can't be used and it forces the landlord to evict them through the slower possession procedures for tenants?

I'm not racist, xenophobic or against immigration.

I don't care where these people come from, but I do care about upholding property rights.

People who do this are crooks and should be dealt with.

If it was my house and the police wouldn't do anything I would take the law into my own hands.

Except that in every one of these appalling crimes as soon as they saw the property was full of the lawful residents’ possessions and was clearly being lived in they would have realised straight away that it wasn’t for rent so the fact that they nevertheless all just rip it off and in the case of the poor old gent chucked his photos and personal possessions out on the street just proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that they’re evil robbing scum and should be deported immediately along with the other couple of hundred thousand evil robbing foreign scum plaguing the streets of every town in UK. No, decent working civilised foreigners are welcome in UK, savage criminals are not and although the government has finally tightened up the entry requirements for new immigrants they have still failed to deal with the appalling problem of all the feral barbarians currently hunting citizens all over UK. Appalling continuing failure of government to leave vulnerable British people to be stamped all over by foreign thugs. Many people are saying so, the victim list is getting longer every day but still the dreadful failed incompetent negligent government continues to fail to act.

If you beleive that, which I don't.

The fact that they said he needed a court order shows pretty clearly that the mysterious and missing LL was a ruse.

    Drivel.

They turn up at the house, there's furniture in every room, clothes in the wardrobes, food in the fridge and freezer, cleaning products under the sink, toothbrushes and other toiletries in the bathroom, along with all the items that go with everyday living, and they think they're just renting the house? They don't suspect for a moment that someone is living there?

    C'mon.......

Looking at the state and situation (lived alone) of the bloke in the photo I doubt it wasn't none too clean either.

This should have raised serious questions from the potential renter. But given it is a known scam it didn't. They knew what they were doing and the quasi legal protections they had.

There should be another offence brought to statute to circumvent this which will only get worse as the recession bites deeper.

Occupation of a live property (The definition of Live would have to be established but could be lived in within the previous 56 days of occupation discovery) without the owners consent will be an offence. Or wording to that effect.

We don't need to tie ourselves up on a punishment tariff simply give the power to police to remove such persons.

  • Er, cos you’ve got loads of space, loads of mountains and wilderness, you’re a long way away and, yes, you’re proper ‘ard and know what to do with filth and you don’t tolerate bad behaviour, you know what’s what and we can rely on you to get the job done efficiently, no mucking about. Plus we’ll pay you and you need the money. Is that enough reasons?

No it's not enough reasons. Stick your money and your criminals up your @rse.

The space, mountains and wilderness are beautiful and peaceful. They're not for cluttering up with scum. Just because you've allowed your country to be ruined, don't try and ruin ours.

All your other ideas were good though. If there's any of that criminal mince going, let me know. My dog would love it.

Yeah, you're right, sorry, yes Scotland's far too nice to be polluted with our scum, yeah, be sure brain is in gear before engaging mouth...a nice big fat bucket of mince on it's way, let me know if your dog prefers certain flavours to others and we'll mix it up just the way he likes it.
