    Hi, teedy,

This is how I make it:

    knob of butter
    large onion
clove or two of garlic (depends on your taste)
    6 carrots
two medium potatoes (not necessary but they help to thicken it)
    red lentils
stock (left over from cooking gammon)
milk (optional but I like to add it)
    bay leaf
    black pepper
salt (not always necessary if your stock is salty)
    parsley
left over bacon/ham pieces chopped up.

Peel and chop the garlic onion, carrot and potatoes. Melt some butter in a large pan and stir the veg in. Add the seasoning and leave it on a low heat to sweat. Next add the lentils followed by the stock and milk and simmer for another half an hour to an hour. Once all the veg are cooked, fish out the bay leaf and whizz it with a stick blender. Then add the chopped ham and parsley for a bit of colour and texture. Sorry that I haven't added quantities but I normally cook by eye. This is a recipe that you can mess around with and it always works.

There's an older thread on making lentil soup that should help:

    Lentil and bacon soup

I'll merge your thread with that one later to keep all the suggestions together.

Thank you pink- winged. I,ll print that one out. I looked under Bacon and lentil, not Lentil and bacon lol. Read this too late however and followed the imaginary recipe from that well renowned Indian chef "Bungdit Din" . It,s alive and kicking even as we speak, doesnt look too bad so far.... havent tasted it yet though.

EDIT oh yummy, warm happy tummy

When i think of bacon & lentil soup I think of green lentils..........not red. Can the green be equally substituted in pink-winged's recipe ?? Or are green lentils a different kettle of fish altogether??????????

I would have go at it, never actually dealt with green lentils, are they the same texture? I dont suppose they taste much different, dive in if thats what you have to use. I wonder if you put in the orange carrots with green lentils will you get a purply soup? lol

I make either pea and ham or lentil and bacon. Same stuff really, lol :)

    Either:
soak green peas overnight. Place peas into a pan with stock and two rashers of pre-cooked bacon and cook until, well, cooked :)

Or I would just bung onions, carrots (grated), lentils and some bacon into a pan and cover with some stock and cook until soft.

I made one yesterday. Onions, chopped carrots, chopped celery, diced bacon, softened in oil. Then I added a large handful of red lentils, and cooked it for a couple of minutes. Then I did roughly equal quantities of chicken stock and passata. I needed extra water later, as it was too thick. Finally, I liquidised it with my stick blender, and we had it with pizza bread. Yummy. It was nice for lunch again today.
