When i think of bacon & lentil soup I think of green lentils..........not red. Can the green be equally substituted in pink-winged's recipe ?? Or are green lentils a different kettle of fish altogether??????????

Green and brown lentils are both whole lentils, will take one to one and a half hours to cook, or 30-45 minutes if they have been pre-soaked. They usually retain their shape even when fully cooked.

Red lentils have been split and will take 20-30 minutes to cook without soaking. They will cook to a mush.

Soaking - cover lentils with twice their volume of cold water and leave for 4-8 hours or overnight.
OR cover with twice volume of cold water in a saucepan, bring to the boil, boil vigorously for 2 minutes then remove the pan from the heat, cover, and leave for one hour.
In both cases pour away the soaking water and add fresh for cooking.

Cold soaking is regarded as better as some more nutrients are supposed to be retained, but hot soaking is very useful for emergencies.

I often make bacon & lentil soup and use a mix of red and green lentils, if that helps. (I use Hugh Fearnley-Whittenstal's recipe from the family cookbook - will dig it out later if anyone wants it). Basically onion, celery, carrots, streaky bacon, red and green lentils in chicken stock, with worcester sauce, tomato puree, thyme and oragano.

Can you please post the recipe? I'd like to try a veggie version of bacon & lentil soup, and this one sounds nice.

Can anyone point me in the direction for a recipe for spicy lentil soup please, or does anyone have a recipe that they wouldn't mind posting.

I have used the search, but with soup in the title, it sends me to loads of different ones, and I haven't found what I'm looking for.

    Thanks

  • Hi All,

Well after finishing off the Scotch Broth I made last week, I am looking to make a new batch tonight.

I have loads of lentils and bacon plus onions, carrots & celery to use up, so fancy some kind soup.

Any ideas how I could do this in my Slow Cooker?
