I know kittens can get into all sorts of places that you don't necessarily expect to find them but that's one of the biggest things that you need to be aware of when you have one.

I would have thought that by finding your older cat in the tumble dryer, you would have been extremely careful with both cats when it came to washers or dryers.

I only know that if it were me I'd be feeling so wretched that the thought of having another kitten would be the last thing on my mind right now and that no one would be able to convince me that it wasn't my fault.

But hey, that's just my take on it. Accidents happen.

See above, I honestly thought he was playing outside with my older cat. It must have been a case of, I turned my back for a second and he got in there.

Ok, I will try explaining it to you. I am not 100% sure how it happened. He may have been in the quilt that I put into the washer, or he may have been inside it. I don't know. But I don't appreciate how people are making out that I am incapable of looking after pets just because of this one accident. Would you be the same if God forbid, one of my children ran out into the road or something? And how does this one accident have any bearing on how capable I am of looking after my children?

Sorry, but that just makes it worse!!!

Thanks for that, you really know how to try and help make someone feel better about a situation don't you? I'm so glad I don't know anyone like you in real life! So you've never made a terrible mistake yourself?

    Nothing like that no!

Accidents do happen and this was an accident. However, your other cat has been in the tumble drier, you think the kitten may have been in the quilt that you put in but he may have just been in the washer (you should be able to know this!!!)and just 4 days after the poor thing has been killed in a wash cycle you want to get another one??Not sensible and well thought out is it.

Please promise you'll wait before you get another one if you do at all

    How old was the kitty?

  • OP, this was a terrible, terrible accident. I feel so sorry for you all, and for the poor kitten - but, I do not think you should beat yourself up anymore than you already have done. You have accepted that you are 'responsible' for what happened, it was, sadly, preventable, but it has happened and now, there is nothing you can do to change it. Parents and pet owners all have cases of 'I turned my back for a second'... you have more than paid for your mistake with the traumatic outcome this resulted in.

Give it some time before you get another kitten - you all need time to get over what happened. If you don't mind me asking, did you bury the kitten? Perhaps it would be nice to plant a rose or something similar, in memory of the little chap? This will help to teach your children about grief, in a positive way, and will be a lasting reminder of him.

Thank you so much for your kind words, yes we have buried him in the garden and we have put a little Christmas tree in the spot where he was buried to remember him. My daughter said Benji isn't a kitten any more, he's a Christmas tree. He's still alive, but as a tree now. I think it is a nice way for her to think of him. She goes down the garden to talk to him as well. My son doesn't seem to know what happened really, but he has other problems so that may be why. He doesn't understand, he is the 7 year old but you'd think my daughter was, how grown up she is. She's only 4.

  • Years ago, and I mean years ago, we had a kitten.

It was only by chance when my mother was putting the last pair of socks into the washing machine that she felt fur......she had no idea he'd climbed in and being a black kitten is going to blend in with a dark background. If those socks hadn't gone in, the kitten would have... shudder the thought.

Our kitten was lucky but it just goes to show how these things can happen.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and I do genuinely feel the OP didn't do it intentionally. She is obviously remorseful and distraught, please don't rub salt into the wounds until you've been in that position yourself.

Many moons ago, my dog as a puppy climbed into the tumble dryer.. I didn't see him go in, but again, as I put the last item in, I saw him but he is white, which probably saved his bacon.

To the OP, you have my sympathy but you do have to move on and learn to live with what happened.
Be happy, it's the greatest wealth :)

Regardless of how our dogs have died, we've always waited a few months or so.

I agree. When we do the washing, we have to keep the washing machine door shut - we have a dog who likes to steal socks.

    Hello

    What do you think?

    Thanks very much

    Sam

I think you shouldn't have asked for advice on here unless you felt you needed a beating over what happened. Doubtless there will be a lot of very accusatory posts still to come. Thank you to those posters who didn't feel the need to put Sam's eyes out, metaphorically speaking.

As for whether you should get another kitten straightaway, only you can know that.
