One of ours is kept on a lead whenever we are out as he WILL bite your dog if it's got testicles and would also taste a sheep if he ever got the chance.

If you choose to let your dog race up to mine (on lead) and ignore my shouted warnings to you, then if my dog takes the throat out of your dog, it's YOUR fault and not mine!

The people who let their UNCONTROLLABLE dogs run off the lead are the irresponsible ones.

This dog will NEVER harm a person or a b1tch, but will kill your male dog if given the chance. He's a terrier and unfortunately that's what ALL terriers will do. It doesn't make him a dangerous dog or me an irresponsible owner.

You CAN excercise a dog on a lead. Casette leads are available upto 12 metres. That's plenty.

Our other dog, a cocker b1tch, will lick you to death, however as I know what she likes to eat, I wouldn't recommend it....

There are elements of your post that I agree with, withabix, primarily your contention that people who allow their dogs to run up to yours are responsible for the consequences as you aware that your dog has issues with other dogs and take appropriate action. :)

However, I can't agree that all dogs should be on the lead around other dogs. Where I regularly walk my pack (off lead) there are numerous other dogs off lead and they interact freely with each other quite amicably in most cases. Where it is not amicable, the dogs sort it out themselves with the odd warning growl or clear "get lost" body language. However, there can be problems when two dogs meet on lead as the animals feel constrained and cannot deal with the situation naturally. The dogs in this situation can also feel any tension coming from owner down through the lead.

Also, I can't agree with your assertion that ALL terriers will kill a male dog given the chance. It is not what they all do; there are terrier breeds who can be iffy with other dogs, I grant you, but this tendency does not apply to all terrier breeds, nor even to all specimens of the breeds who can have this tendency; I've had one of the latter category myself in the past.

Finally, it is not enough for all dogs to be exercised on extending leads. The particular breed I have now would soon become deeply frustrated if this constituted their exercise regime and behavioural problems would ensue pretty quickly. Their instinct is to seek out game and hunt and they require a high level of energetic activity for a considerable period every day. I would go so far as to say I would be being cruel to them if I did not allow them the outlet for their natural instincts and exercise needs.

I'm not getting at you personally, as we all have differing views, but it is nice to have a debate about things and exchange views. :)

How many places are there with no other dogs around? I let my dog off where there are other dogs and I know he will come back as soon as I call him. I certainly don't agree that a dog can be exercised properly on any sort of lead. I have a large dog with gets at least 3 hours of exercise a day, most of it running around. He cannot run properly on a lead and how many hours would I need to walk him if he could not run?

i used to take cain to an unused kiddies play area and shut the gate so he could run around. when i saw unused kiddies play area i mean it was unused, there were no swings or anything, it was a small bit of fenced off wasteland that once had a basketball court on it.

mr mob walks acin now and he enjoys himself meeting othert dogs. maybe he grew out of his agression towards other dogs.

Fleago makes an interesting point ... one of our dogs was and, to a lesser degree, can be 'moody' when she meets other dogs on a lead ... she is fine with the same dogs if she is off the lead.

I agree that they can all be dangerous..There might be exceptions, but I just don't know.

Years ago when our kids were small we got a Golden Retriever which is supposed to have a great nature and good with kids (maybe we were just unlucky). It hated kids and old people. When DH took it out in the morning if and elderly person passed it would start to growl at them. Then it gave a snap at one of the kids friends and finally also had a go at my youngest.
We had him back at the breeder and took him to classes but made no difference. Finally gave him away to people with no kids with a warning what he was like.

It was very sad getting rid of him cos he just loved me, but there was no way I could keep a dog like that for fear of what could happen.

The following is a message from one of my dogs that has jumped onto my desk and stood on my keyboard while I was replying to another thread. I have however recorded her words of wisdom for posterity.

Apparently, if you lose one sense, others senses are enhanced. That's why those who have no sense of humour have an enlarged sense of self-importance.

You are so right about people letting dogs out to walk themselves. Why do they have dogs if they can not be bothered to give them the exercise they need!

    Ditto for kids too!
