what dogs are dangerous?

I was bitten by a rottweiler when I was 16 years old ... before they were known as 'dangerous' dogs. It took at nice chunk out of my bum and as I hit it to get it off (it was on a lead with it's owner) it got my hand in it's mouth and shook my arm so hard that it broke it.
My arm was covered in blood although the cut wasn't as severe as it seemed at the time.
I went to the hospital who sorted me out and they told me to report it to the police. I think the ruling was something along the lines that if a dog was known to have bitten someone 3 times it can be put down.
I went to the police station the next day and found that I wasn't the first to report this dog and the police investigated. Within a couple of weeks the dog was put down.
I am just glad that it was me it bit as if it had been the child who was watching from a couple of feet away she would have had no chance. She was screaming just watching but this dog could have killer her.
The owner said that it was on a lesd and that I must have 'annoyed' it. I was stood waiting to cross the road, I never even gave the dog a second thought so I know that the dog did turn on me for NO reason.
I say ban them all, they are vicious and dangerous animals. If they don't get banned then a muzzle should be worn at all times.
I hate all dogs now with a passion and no dog to me is cute or harmless.0 -

Mmm good job you were not mugged by an even more dangerous animal then!"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

I know people who had to get their pedegree spaniel put to sleep, as it but one of them, apparently the male spaniel wants to rule the roost and can be aggresive if he doesn't get to do so!
Its a minefield, and the media, imho, are stirring all this up to sell papers etc!

when i was a kid i was attacked by one of those lassie dogs, and have a scar on my face now because of it, and i thought lassie wasa nice dog! You're not drunk if you can lie on the floor without holding on0

lassie dogs are notoriously snappy blighters. my mus friend had one years and years ago and she was always shut in the kitchen if we visited because she was snappy with strangers.
cain barked at a child once outside a shop (he was tied up minding his own business) and i got abuse from the parent for having a 'dangerous animal'. it didnt cross this womans mind once that i had watched cain being teased and poked with a plastic sword by this 'angel' of a child. i even shouted out the shop door to the kid to leave him alone but the child persisted. cain did not lunge or bare teeth at the child but barked at him in a 'go away and stop annoying me' manner. There's someone in my head, but it's not me0 -
for the record, i just wanted to state that my dog is completely harmless

I saw a programme on the box that said that the domestication of dogs was a process of keeping them in a state of infantilism. They went onto to say that this wasn't a permanent state of affairs because when they run away and meet up with other strays they start to grow up. So if you don't dote on your little darlings and they runaway and then return, they might bite your bum.Peel back your baby's eyelid to find no nationality or religious identity mark there. Peer at your baby's eyes for them to reflect back just people-throw away your flags and religious symbols...0

I think the purpose the dog was originally bred for will be a good indicator of what you can expect. If it was originally bred to guard or to fight then it stands to reason that it will be more aggressive than a dog bred to retrieve shot game. Hunting dogs are bred for different quarry so you have to look to see what they were expected to go after. Greyhounds for hare and rabbit, Weimaraners for wild boar - if I knew that I would expect a Weimaraner to be more aggressive than a Greyhound. I am not saying that they are just that if they were it should not be a surprise.0

I run puppy training and socialisation classes. The whole idea of these classes is to teach puppies (and their owners) not only stuff like 'sit' and walking on the lead nicely, but also introducing them to people, kids and adults, and some of the strange things we do - like hugging them, grabbing them, vets exams etc. We have one whole lesson almost dedicated to those aspects of human behaviour which may upset a dog, and we get the kids in the class to dress up, wearing crash helments, sunglasses, wearing hats, and halloween masks, and then introduce the puppies to them, making sure it's a fun relaxed thing for all.
One of the puppies I have in class at the moment is an American Bulldog - he came to classes aged 16 weeks and already starting to growl at people who approached him, but over the weeks he's learnt that letting people fuss him is a pleasant experience. Whilst his owner will never be able to leave him alone with a small child - no responsible dog owner would want to do that anyway........
At the same time, there is a headline in my local paper about a 3 year old bitten by a families Mastiff - the family admit she was teasing the dog - but the dog pays the ultimate price, the family feel all nice and warm and fuzzy because they did the 'right thing' - had the dog PTS, but surely the 'right thing' was not to allow the child to tease the dog in the first place, and to make sure the dog was trained/socialised as well.......Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -
Any dog can be dangerous and any person would be a fool to dispute that. Dogs like humans have off days and snap, even the most mild mannered of humans can turn so why can't dogs. I like dogs and have had and will in the future have dogs but I would never ever trust any dog with children no matter what. What I particularly hate is dog owners who let dogs run up to my children stating "they are harmless they love kids etc". My son hates dogs and why should he be subjected to a dog running up to him just because the owner can be bothered to keep it on a lead or away from children. Why do people put dogs over children? And why do owners presume all kids love dogs? I shall await the bashing from dog ownersNo Matter what you do there will be critics.0
