Ok, unless otherwise I can hear a voice to the contrary, the consensus seems to be that is IS pretty well just an advertising stunt with no indication as to actual competitiveness.

SAGA certainly underwrite their own motor insurance though home and travel are both a separate underwriter which I have to admit I dont recognise the name of but then I concentrate on motor generally and SAGA at the best of the time isnt on my radar as a competitor.

That said and done, if they are a true partner and not just an introducer then many insurers will write separate rating criteria to ensure that their common pool is stable given the likely customer mix. If you look at the RBS brands like Tesco, Prudential, DL, Churchill, Privilege - all of them have their own underwriting terms despite 3 of them being the identical company and the other 2 being partnerships all 5 will give significant different price - not that I have ever seen rate raiding results ;)
Astaroth, I'm a bit perplexed about what you write about SAGA underwriting thier own motor insurance. What I wrote was from experience of a friend of mine who used SAGA and his certificat stated that his insurer was Liverpool Victoria but that was about 3 years ago.

I dont know if it has changed but....

Saga Motor Insurance is underwritten by Saga Insurance Company Ltd.
a wholly owned subsidiary of Saga Group Limited. Registered in England and Wales (Company No: 732602) Registered Office: The Saga Building, Enbrook Park, Folkestone, Kent, CT20 3SE

Liv Vic is currently based in Bournmouth but of cause with the ABC Insurance linkup their CEO for the insurance division and his board are now in Croydon so will have to see if their formal head office moves or not - knowing John O'Roarke Steve Castle and Peter Horton it probably will :D

Can't argue with that, and I didn't know that Liverpool Victoria were based in Bournemouth either. I have been with Frizzells since my early days in the Civil Service (preferential terms) in the middle 70s and they have always been in Bournemouth but didn't realise LV had moved there following their aquisition of Frizzell.
Certainly after LVs involvement the terms have not been as good as in the old Frizzell days when I used to insure my Audi Coupe for £400 less than I could get anywhere else (£270ish).

Yes, their customers arent rating them too highly at the moment - a recent customer survey showed the Liv Vic group as being 30th out of 30 for customer satisfaction.

JoR has said they will be in the top 3 insurer within 5 years so I guess that will be changing when his new team start to change operations

  • Hi - please could anyone help my parents?
They are 75 and 73 and travel abroad regularly.
My Dad has recently been diagnosed as diabetic and is now on permanent medication - I am looking for reasonably priced annual travel insurance for them - can anyone advise a company that will do this?

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Worth trying Saga. They will cover diabetes and specialise in the over 50s. There is a freephone line to declare medical history: 0800 056 5464
None of this is going to be cheap compared with 'ordinary' travel insurance, but I found Saga cheapest.
