I've been reading through this thread but didn't want to post until I'd finished something!

I was desperate for a shabby chic/country style dining table and chairs, but couldn't find what I wanted anywhere for a decent price. I found a table and chairs I liked in a charity shop (it then went on offer while I was umming and ahhing over whether or not to buy it!) so I bought it, and DH and I have been hard at work refurbishing it.

We primed the table and base and chairs with a primer/undercoat from Homebase, then painted with Homebase Sanctuary chalk white eggshell (purchased on one of their offer weekends using vouchers!) and table top has been sanded and waxed, although it is quite streaky (used Briwax). Chairs have been reupholstered using a fabric I loved, purchased from a website via TopCashBack.

I think we've probably spent about £200 getting it all up to scratch, and I was looking at at least £400 for something similar on eBay. I can now use the same paint to match all the other furniture in the dining room (got a dresser on eBay I'm still working on!) and can't wait til it's all finished!

    Hope these pics work!

Sorry if these pics are huge!!

    beautiful!

I am looking for a table and chairs but I can't find anything I like on ebay and I don't want to pay full price in a shop. I will have to start haunting furniture charity shops now - these are lovely.

Thanks everyone. There are some blobs of paint on the chairs but I don't think it was too bad for a first time! I also switched a few coats in to use a small roller rather a brush, wish I'd started with it as the coverage seemed much better.

Deborah - I got this from a British Heart foundation furniture shop, there's a few charities near me who have dedicated furniture shops. We got the table on offer for £100, delivery was £20 but they also took away an old futon at the same time, so I was doubly happy!

Keep an eye out on Freecycle as well, typically after I'd bought this there seemed to be a lot of them locally on offer to me! But I was happy that the money we spent went to charity.

I've just used these on a 1920s dressing table. Bought for £2, took the mirror off the back, sanded and painted cream. It looks gorgeous for the grand total of less than £7 !

Wow! Love it. I have an almost identical table and chairs and have started by painting just one chair. Plan is to do more this half term. And I was going to use the same fabric in red. Was feeling a bit nervous but this is great. Thanks for the inspiration. I'd also like to do a dresser so can't wait to see yours. :):).

  • Laura, your table and chairs look fantastic. I am thinking about painting some Oak furniture I have which I love. I am getting new flooring put in to the living room in a couple of weeks and not sure if the light oak will go with the darker floor. Need to wait and see.

I am always a bit scared to start painting furniture in case I make a bad job or don't like it but I need to be brave.
