Following on from my first post on this thread I'm keen to try some chalky stuff.

Have been googling but find that a lot of the posts and tutorial a etc are American. They talk about latex paint ......what's our equivalent?

Also can somebody recommend the type of wax (and fave brand if possible) that they use?

    Many thanks

latex = emulsion. Matt is best but I use any old leftovers. I'm using Annie Sloan Wax, some use briwax.

The easiest home made chalk paint for me to use is 3 parts emulsion, 1 part plaster of Paris ( from The Range) nearly 1 part of warm water. Mix p of P & water well, for a few minutes then add in the paint. Stir well, and stir often during use. It takes up to 4 coats to go from dark brown to white. I started off using polyfiller as I had some on hand.

Wonderful, answered all my questions and more. Fortunately have The Range just a few miles away so know where I'm off to tomorrow.

    Thanks

I'm new to this shabby chic lark, but I bought a fab 1930's dresser which I want to paint myself. Anyone got any ideas? I thought about maybe painting it white but leaving the top surfaces varnished and maybe adding some Kath Kidson esque material to the central surface. It's my first time doing anything like this!

Ziggazee that will look lovely painted although I think I would paint it all but that's a personal choice. My mum and dad had one very similar but it was much darker.

Can I pick your brains? I got a table from Freegle that has a very shiny varnish on. It is square, like a small dining table. I know I want to paint the legs, etc, but what should I use for the top as I want to keep it wooden. I have sanded 2 of the legs so far and they are a lovely light colour (under the slightly orange varnish). If I sand the top what should I coat it in, oil, wax or varnish?

It is a fairly modern table but I would like that farmhouse type look and it will go in the conservatory.

    Many thanks in advance.

I've been reading through this thread but didn't want to post until I'd finished something!

I was desperate for a shabby chic/country style dining table and chairs, but couldn't find what I wanted anywhere for a decent price. I found a table and chairs I liked in a charity shop (it then went on offer while I was umming and ahhing over whether or not to buy it!) so I bought it, and DH and I have been hard at work refurbishing it.

We primed the table and base and chairs with a primer/undercoat from Homebase, then painted with Homebase Sanctuary chalk white eggshell (purchased on one of their offer weekends using vouchers!) and table top has been sanded and waxed, although it is quite streaky (used Briwax). Chairs have been reupholstered using a fabric I loved, purchased from a website via TopCashBack.

I think we've probably spent about £200 getting it all up to scratch, and I was looking at at least £400 for something similar on eBay. I can now use the same paint to match all the other furniture in the dining room (got a dresser on eBay I'm still working on!) and can't wait til it's all finished!

    Hope these pics work!

They are absolutely beautiful, well done!

What a difference, love the fabric on the chairs too.

Thanks! I'm a bit unsure if Briwax was the right stuff to use after we had sanded it though, it has made the table top a bit streaky and patchy in places... Not sure if it will resolve itself if we polish it a bit?

The fabric was Clarke & Clarke Dotty, I had seen it on something on eBay and loved it. I ended up buying far too much for the chairs, so am passing some to my mum (who has a sewing machine!) to make a table runner for me, then I think I'll make some fabric hearts to hang on the dresser handles!
