Gorgeous dresser. I also like the owl sitting on top :) Shame about the piano. I was about to say the same as Bibbity.

  • Shelly your dresser looks absolutely fantastic love the heart knobs. You have gone for a darker top on yours than I did with mine and I love it.
  • Spider in the bath love your chair and stool transformation :)

    Lovely fabric!
If you want a standard white then I would primer, undercoat and paint in emulsion and then varnish in acrylic varnish, which does not yellow with time.
If you want an off white or cream then it is worth looking at some of the more expensive paints - you'll find many Farrow and Ball favourites listed on this thread! If you find and F&B shade that you love, check on other brand's charts to see if you can achiecve it more cheaply!
I tend to use emulsion and varnish because that is so much easier to work with than gloss. If you'd rather use one product then I suggest satinwood.
I used to do a lot of upholstery and my 1st project was a chair. Painted the frame in satinwood and got a good result.
I`m sure it will look lovely whatever you decide to use.
  • love love love these shabby chic threads. i really want to get started on projects of my own - i am currently on a backpacking trip with partner - back in the uk next may - and will have to start small as will be staying with family to begin with when we get home. hoping to get a sewing machine as well, do many go on freecycle? i will have so much to do when i get back as starting from scratch - new town/job/home/car etc but some shabby chic projects are high on my adgenda so will be reading the thread during the trip and hopefully getting some advice next summer on my first project. :D

Thanks everyone I'm loving it and Hubby is well happy. He didn't seem at all keen when I told him what I planned but now he keeps looking at saying how lovely it is :)
LOL bibbitybob my FIL is so funny he chopped up his piano due to woodworm and that went on the fire too :D. I wish I had taken a photo he drives a 3 wheeler (I know it's so embarrassing :o:o:o) and my piano was chopped up and placed on the roofrack and off he went!:rotfl::rotfl:
Cherisong I love owls and couldn't resist him he is actually a money box and only cost me £2.99 in Dunelm mill! I design my own owl cushions and make them in my spare time so will have to post a piccie.
Hi Craftydeb I'm a bit embarrassed that it took me so long to do but I have been so busy with sock monkey orders I haven't had time to finish it. The top is actually the original colour of the dresser and it is quite dark but it look nice. I liked the colour on yours tho x

I may take a photo of all my sock monkeys sitting on it later lol x

  • hiya ladies, can i ask a question? i'm getting a drop leaf table that used to be my mums nanas and mum said im fine to paint it as its a bit battered. do i have to sand it or can i just primer and paint? if sanding is necessary does it have to be thorough or just a keying up job?

(sorry about lack of caps i'm feeding ds while typing one handed).

Hello everyone I have been awol for quite some time but I am so chuffed my dresser was finished today and is now having pride of place in my dining room. I have decided not to put the top on for now and work on that in the new year. I am a little sad that my piano has been chopped up today to make way for the dresser but hey ho nobody wants old piano's these days ! Here are some pics of before and after:

Thank you Gingababe I bought the handles from Homebase. They were £3.99 each :eek::eek: or 6 for £10!!!!!! couldn't see any difference in the ones in the pack or the single ones!

  • After seeing some wonderful pictures of renovated furniture I thought I'd post a few of my own.

Here is a rocking chair I bought some time ago, stipped all the wadding off, sanded it down fully and then re-upholstered and re-varnished.

I renovated the stool in the second picture too.

    Love the finished result :)
